A new report has estimated that the reunification of Ireland would cost around €20 billion a year for two decades. Findings from the Dublin-based Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) take into account the current level of funding Northern Ireland receives from the UK government. They also include the share of UK national debt it would presumably carry were it to join a united Ireland as well as its economy's markedly low productivity relative to the Republic of Ireland. A Belfast judge ruled on Wednesday that a new law granting immunity from prosecution for most offences committed during the conflict in Northern Ireland violates human rights. The new measure was passed in September 2023 as part of the British government's Legacy and Reconciliation Bill, an attempt to finally lay to rest the ghosts of the decades of violence known as the Troubles. The legislation stops prosecutions for killings by militant groups and British soldiers during the conflict, which claimed some 3,500 people lives between the 1960s and 1990s.
