Washington (AFP) - An emotional Pentagon spokesman lashed out Friday at Russian President Vladimir Putin's "depravity" in Ukraine, questioning how any moral person could defend bombing hospitals and summary executions of innocent people. John Kirby, the former US Navy admiral who has briefed journalists on camera five days a week since the war began on February 24, lost his composure momentarily as he spoke of atrocities committed in Ukraine. "It's hard to look at what he's doing in Ukraine, what his forces are doing in Ukraine, and think that any ethical, moral individual could justify that,"...

Washington (AFP) - Russia's drive to seize control of Ukraine quickly has lost momentum amid resistance from Ukrainian fighters on the ground and in the air, a senior US defense official said Friday. "Their momentum, particularly as it comes to Kyiv, has slowed over the last 24 hours," the official said. Russian forces, which entered Ukraine early Thursday, have yet to seize any major cities, or gain control of airspace, the official said. "They have not achieved the progress that we believe they anticipated they would," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "A good indicator...

Washington (AFP) - Russia continues to build up its forces along the border with Ukraine and has now deployed "north of 100,000" troops, the Pentagon said Wednesday. "We have continued to see even over the last 24 hours additional capabilities flow from elsewhere in Russia to that border with Ukraine and Belarus," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said. "We're not going to get into providing specific numbers but the numbers continue to grow," he said. Referring to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Kirby said "we maintain that he's north of 100,000 for sure." "And he continues to add to that capabilit...

Washington (AFP) - The US military could be forced to withdraw American soldiers currently based in Ukraine if Russia invades the country. Close to 200 National Guard troops are in Ukraine, part of a regular rotation dating back to 2015, training with the Ukrainian army alongside troops from NATO countries like Canada and Germany. In addition there is an unknown number of US special operations forces in the country, working with their Ukrainian counterparts. US President Joe Biden has ruled out the possibility of US soldiers fighting against the Russians if they do attack Ukraine. This is seen...

Washington (AFP) - The threat of more attacks against Kabul airport remains acute one day before the US military completes its withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years of war, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Monday. Kirby said the evacuation operation at the airport, currently controlled by thousands of US troops, is on high alert after the Islamic State-Khorasan launched five rockets at the operation earlier Monday. The group last week carried out a suicide bombing at one of the airport's gates killing more than 100 people, including 13 US troops. And over the weekend a US drone-launched...

Washington (AFP) - Twelve US servicemen were killed and 15 wounded in suicide bombing attacks in Kabul on Thursday by Islamic State militants, the head of US Central Command said. "A number of Afghan civilians were also killed and injured in the attack," General Kenneth McKenzie told reporters. "We're still working to calculate the total losses." McKenzie said the US airlift in Kabul would continue despite the attacks. "Let me be clear. While we're saddened by the loss of life, both US and Afghan, we're continuing to execute the mission," he said, "which is to get as many evacuees and citizens...

New York (AFP) - Karen Baker was a crisis communications expert at the Pentagon on 9/11 but nothing could prepare her for what she would soon have to do -- announce the deaths of friends. As the second plane hit the World Trade Center, confirming that New York was under attack, Baker couldn't imagine that she would be in danger at the US Defense Department headquarters in Washington. "This is the safest place to be in the world right now," the then 33-year-old media relations specialist for the United States military remembers telling a co-worker. That illusion was soon shattered when American...

Washington (AFP) - The Pentagon said Friday that it was canceling all US-Mexico border wall construction projects paid for with military funds. Former US president Donald Trump had ordered the diversion of billions of dollars in Pentagon money to pay for the barrier after being denied funding by Congress. President Joe Biden announced a halt to border wall construction after taking office in January. "Consistent with the president's proclamation, the Department of Defense is proceeding with canceling all border barrier construction projects paid for with funds originally intended for other mil...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden announced a review of the US military stance toward China, saying the country needs a "strong" approach, while pledging that his administration will use force only as a last resort. On his first visit to the Pentagon as president, Biden also sought to break from the policies of his predecessor Donald Trump, promising the US defense force to keep domestic politics out of the country's security. "I will never dishonor you, I will never disrespect you," he said, as Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stood at his side. "I will nev...

Washington (AFP) - The United States strongly condemned NATO ally Turkey on Friday after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed the first test of a Russian-made S-400 air defense system and dismissed US criticism."The US Department of Defense condemns in the strongest possible terms Turkey's October 16 test of the S-400 air defense system -- a test confirmed today by Turkish President Recep Erdogan," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement."We object to Turkey's testing of this system, which risks serious consequences for our security relationship," Hoffman said. "We ...
