Steph Curry, James Wiseman lead Warriors in 121-99 win over Spurs
Dressed in navy blue with dashes of orange and gold Wednesday night, the Golden State Warriors wearing their Oakland-inspired uniforms looked more like the dominant team that closed out Oracle Arena with five-straight Finals runs than the one rebuilding since the move to San Francisco. In Golden State’s 121-99 win over the San Antonio Spurs at Chase Center, guard Stephen Curry led a thrilling offensive performance complete with made 3-pointers, crisp ball movement and rim-rocking dunks. Curry and rookie center James Wiseman (20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, six rebounds and four assists) connec...

Tomas Hertl, San Jose Sharks top St. Louis Blues in shootout
Tomas Hertl scored in the fourth round of the shootout to help give the Sharks a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday, splitting the two-game series at Enterprise Center. Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 23 saves in regulation time and overtime, and didn’t allow a goal in the shootout as the Sharks evened their record at 2-2-0. Ryan Donato, Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc all could not beat Jordan Binnington in the first three rounds of the shootout before Hertl came though, giving the Sharks a critical second point after they had lost their last two games. The Sharks blew a chance to w...

Pistons blow 17-point fourth-quarter lead vs. Hawks, lose in overtime, 123-115
The Detroit Pistons were cruising to their second blowout victory in three games. They led the Atlanta Hawks by 17 points midway through the fourth quarter, after leading by double digits for most of the second half. Then, the Pistons collapsed. The Hawks forced overtime by outscoring Detroit 24-7, tying the game at 106 after Trae Young found a cutting Clint Capela for an open dunk. The momentum didn't come back to the Pistons in overtime, as the Hawks scored 17 more points in the extra period, completing the comeback win, 123-115. Jerami Grant topped 20 points for the 13th consecutive game, f...

Joel Embiid’s 42 points power Sixers to 117-109 victory against Celtics
PHILADELPHIA — The Boston Celtics had a lot to do with the 76ers’ facelift. The Celtics sweeping them in the first round of last season’s playoffs led to several drastic offseason changes. The Sixers have a new coaching staff, hired Daryl Morey and other front-office personnel, and added new complimentary pieces for Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Tobias Harris. So some could consider Wednesday’s contest was sort of a barometer game to see how the new-look Sixers matched up against Boston. Just sort of. Both teams were without a key starter — Seth Curry (Sixers) and Jayson Tatum (Celtics) — due ...

How did the Hornets defense suddenly get so good? A strategy rarely used by NBA teams.
That the Charlotte Hornets play lots of zone defense this season? No huge surprise. The shocker is they play zone nearly twice as much as any other NBA team. They use this tactic to hover around the top-10 in defensive efficiency. The Hornets have been solid defensively in a 6-8 start. They are currently 11th in points allowed per opponent possession, at 1.053, and that’s virtually a tie with Milwaukee and Indiana for ninth-best. By coach James Borrego’s description, when the Hornets avoid cheap transition baskets off turnovers, they’re one of the five best defenses in the NBA. Some of that su...

Will Bills employ same defensive strategy against Chiefs, hoping for different result?
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — When they met earlier this season, the Buffalo Bills looked to limit Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ passing attack. And that happened. Mahomes threw for 225 yards, well below his league-leading 316-yard average. But that left Buffalo vulnerable to the run. Rookie Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 161 yards. The Chiefs ran 46 times for 245 yards overall, both high marks for an Andy Reid-coached Chiefs team. Will that happen again? Not getting beat deep was the best way to hang with the Chiefs, the Bills believed, and Buffalo did that. The Chiefs converted ...

Shawn Windsor: New Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell's philosophy for football is already outdated
The Detroit Lions new head coach, Dan Campbell, has never been a coordinator. He has never called plays, on either side of the ball. He has never had to take an offseason and design a detailed, meticulous strategy and stuff it in a binder, or on a computer. And that's just fine. Campbell understands the game. Relates well to players — according to many who have played for him. And, by most accounts, has a fine sense of the shifting cultural norms from one generation to the next. As he told Billy Liucci, a Texas A&M writer who hosts a podcast, last summer: “You have to be able to adjust to the ...

Jeff Seidel: Lions taking big gamble with Dan Campbell; at least their plan seems clear
DETROIT — We have seen all kinds of Detroit Lions regimes. But this feels totally different. How all the pieces have come together. The Lions didn’t hire the people’s choice to be their next head coach. Robert Saleh, from Dearborn, Mich., was scooped up by the New York Jets. The Lions didn’t go with the familiar. Darrell Bevell, the Lions interim head coach, interviewed for the job but didn’t get it. They didn’t jump for the hot assistant coach. The Lions interviewed Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy but he didn’t get it. The Lions didn’t go with experience. The Lions inte...

With Jose Quintana leaving, 4 of the 5 pitchers who entered last spring in the Chicago Cubs rotation are now gone
Three pitchers who entered last spring as the Nos. 3-4-5 starters in the Chicago Cubs rotation signed one-year deals with new teams over the last few days. Jon Lester left for the Washington Nationals, Tyler Chatwood signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and Jose Quintana reunited with former Cubs manager Joe Maddon with the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday on a one-year, $8 million deal. Only Lester ended 2020 in the Cubs rotation — Quintana underwent surgery on his left thumb before the restart and Chatwood made only five starts before going down with a season-ending right forearm injury. Even with...

Wade Davis follows in Holland's footsteps, returns to Royals on minor league contract
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a turn-back-the-clock move, right-handed relief pitcher Wade Davis rejoined the Kansas City Royals organization he helped to back-to-back World Series appearances and where he was a two-time All-Star. Davis, 35, signed a minor league contract worth $1.25 million if he's in majors with an additional $1.125 million in performance bonuses on Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. The contract terms are identical to the deal right-handed reliever Greg Holland signed last winter to return to the organization. Holland, who was part of the dominating "HDH" ...
