South Korea's highest court on Thursday upheld the 20-year prison sentence of disgraced former president Park Geun Hye, the country's first female leader, for abuse of power and other crimes, ending a long-running legal battle. The Supreme Court in Seoul rejected an appeal by the prosecution against a reduced prison term decided in July. Prosecutors had been seeking for an earlier sentence of 30 years to be reinstated. Thursday's ruling marks the final decision in the corruption case of 68-year-old Park, who was forced from office by the Constitutional Court and arrested in 2017. The court als...

South Korea Passes ‘BTS Law’ Allowing Boy Band Members To Postpone Military Service
The South Korean Parliament has passed a bill that grants the nation’s most prominent K-pop stars the ability to put off mandatory military service an extra two years, until the age of 30. It’s a spot of good news for BTS‘ oldest member, Kim Seok-jin, also known mononymously as Jin, who turns 28 this Friday, Dec. 4. 2021 Hyundai Venue Denim Edition: An old Soul?Price: $23,305 as tested. Carpeted floor mats ($135) were the lone option.Conventional wisdom: Consumer Reports likes the controls, fuel economy, and braking, but not “the ride, noise, fit and finish, or rear seat.”Marketer’s pitch: “Small SUV. Big city hustle.”Reality: Definitely has the flavor of the original Kia Soul in so many ways. What’s new: Hyundai added the Venue to its lineup in 2020. Though like the Soul, it’s smaller, and no all-wheel-drive version is offered. It’s an attractive little box, looking like a kiddie-cart version of the Palis...

Dennis Anderson: Generations hunt together, relate with the land
BARRONETT, Wis. — Somewhere in a tree maybe a half-mile from my stand Saturday morning was my friend Norb Berg. Staring hard now at his 89th birthday, he remains as fascinated with deer today as he was more than a half-century ago when he returned from Korea and scrounged places to hunt with friends in northern Minnesota. The shot I heard in the distance at 7 a.m. on opening day of the Wisconsin firearms deer season might have been Norb’s. Or perhaps it was that of his great grandson, Sean Thornton, cracking off a round, which would have delighted Norb even more.A self-described champion of los...
