The demonstration was against legislators extending the use of Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant, also known as the “Third Nuclear Powerplant.” Protestors braved the rain dressed in coats and straw hats, as speakers played the nuclear leak alarm message. Taiwan currently has four nuclear power plants, with the first and second in the process of decommissioning, a third one still in use and a fourth whose construction was suspended in April 2014.

A once-thriving coal mining town in Taiwan has reinvented itself as a tourist attraction and home to over 100 feline residents. Houtong, in Ruifang – west of the capital Taipei – was originally called “monkey cave.” During the 20th century, the area led Taiwan’s coal production – with 220,000 tons clawed from the earth each year. It spurred a population boom peaking at around 6,000. But young residents emigrated as the industry faded in the 1990s, leaving fewer than 100 villagers as the job market dried up. That was until 2008, when a local resident and photographer – Peggy Chien – began to ta...

"Face à la montée de l'autoritarisme et à la Chine, l'équipe en charge de la sécurité nationale ne doit pas se soustraire à ses responsabilités, doit considérer l'avenir du pays comme sa propre mission et doit assumer le devoir de le défendre", a-t-il insisté. Taiwan has vowed to remove 760 remaining statues of its late martial law-era leader Chiang Kai-shek, despite criticism that such moves “erase” the past. See also: HKFP Lens: Symbols of savagery or tributes to founder figure? Taiwan ponders fate of Chiang Kai-shek statues The island has long been divided over how – if at all – to commemorate Chaing. Whilst he helped defeat the invading Japanese in World War II, fought Mao Zedong’s communists, and built modern Taiwan, he also ruled it with an iron fist for decades. During a 1947 crackdown, at least 18,000 people were killed on Chiang’s watch, wh...

The United States Senate has overwhelmingly passed a $95 billion (€88 billion) foreign aid package with funds earmarked for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The bill passed 79-18 late on Tuesday evening after the House of Representatives passed it on Saturday. Its passage comes after months of delays and debate over the extent to which the US should be involved in foreign wars. President Joe Biden, who worked with congressional leaders to win support, said in a statement that he would sign the bill into law on Wednesday and immediately start the process of sending weapons to Ukraine which has been ...

Taipei (AFP) - Taiwan's incoming president Lai Ching-te said on Tuesday that a multi-billion US military aid package will "strengthen deterrence against authoritarianism", as China ramps up political and military pressure on the self-ruled island. Democratic Taiwan is claimed by China, which has said it would never renounce the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taipei has in recent years bolstered its economic and political ties with top partner and weapons provider the United States, a move that China has warned Washington against doing. The US House of Representatives passe...

L'agence météorologique centrale de Taipei a évalué ces séismes respectivement à 6,0 et 6,3. Selon le gouvernement, il s'agirait...

Washington (AFP) - The US House of Representatives on Saturday approved long-delayed military aid to Ukraine in a rare show of bipartisan unity, while also bolstering Israel and Taiwan defenses and threatening to ban Chinese-owned TikTok. The four bills in the $95 billion package were overwhelmingly approved in quick succession, though they leave the future of Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson in some doubt as he seeks to fend off angry far-right detractors. US President Joe Biden said in a statement the legislation would "deliver critical support to Israel and Ukraine; provide desperatel...

Washington (AFP) - Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives on Saturday quickly passed two key aid bills to counter China and bolster Taiwan while also threatening a ban on TikTok if it fails to divest from Beijing. Voting on major bills on Ukraine and Israel was yet to come. Lawmakers began voting on the foreign aid and arms bills, totaling some $95 billion, at 1:00 pm (1700 GMT), and embattled Republican Speaker Mike Johnson was forced to rely on Democratic votes for passage. The bills are the product of months of acrimonious negotiations, pressure from US allies and repeated pleas for a...

A student protester must be able to chant slogans with an air of certainty. A pragmatic legislator has to navigate the ambiguities of politics. Lin Fei-fan has managed to do both. Lin, a former leader of Taiwan’s Sunflower Movement, has been deputy-secretary general of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) since 2019. The DPP in January won an unprecedented third presidential term, and despite its activist origins now represents the establishment. Like many DPP politicians, Lin has been fiercely criticised by Beijing. “I just learnt that the Taiwan Affairs Office said I was harming Taiwan,” h...
