New York (AFP) - Toyota will significantly expand an electric battery plant in North Carolina, ramping up a bet on zero-emission vehicles in the United States, the automaker announced Tuesday. The Japanese car company now plans a $13.9 billion investment in the southern state, up from the prior $5.9 billion price tag for the project, first announced in December 2021. New York (AFP) - Japanese carmaker Toyota led US automobile sales in 2021, according to figures released Tuesday, overtaking General Motors for the first time as a shortage of semiconductors roils the car industry. The shift atop the rankings came after a year in which assembly lines were plagued by scarcity of the crucial computer chips, resulting in steep fourth-quarter sales declines for both companies. But Toyota still managed to grow annual sales in the United States by 10.4 percent to 2.3 million, while General Motors suffered a 12.9 percent drop to 2.2 million. Toyota, which has been cr...

"Toyota's commitment to electrification is about achieving long-term sustainability for the environment, American jobs and consumers," said Ted Ogawa, c...

GM said US sales soared 40 percent this spring to 688,236 units. "The US economy is accelerating, consumer spending is robust and jobs are plentiful," GM Chief Economist Elaine Buckberg said. "Consumer demand for vehicles is also strong, but con...

Washington (AFP) - US ride-hailing service Lyft agreed to sell its autonomous driving division to a unit of Japan's Toyota for $550 million, the companies said Monday. The move follows a similar divestment from Uber last year, with ride-sharing firms focusing on core operations as they struggle during the coronavirus pandemic. The Lyft operation known as Level 5 will be folded into Woven Planet Holdings, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, which will create a team of some 1,200 people working on self-driving technology in Japan, the United States and Britain. Lyft will receive some $550 ...
