  • Commentary: We'd rather that some things stopped spreading, but goodwill isn’t one of them

If you drive south on I-95 from Washington, D.C., toward Richmond, Virginia, you can’t miss two huge Confederate flags, miles apart, deliberately placed so as to be unmissable from the highway. The message is more than a reminder that people are free to cling to offensive symbols and behavior; it’s meant as a poke in the eye to anyone arguing against the pain and real-life effects of discrimination. Old attitudes are frustratingly slow to change. Society has accepted a lot of nastiness that it never should have, and there have always been bad actors among us. It was only recently that the cast...

  • Debra-Lynn B. Hook: Once a mother, always

It would take an act of God for me to give birth right now. But there are times when I feel like I’m in labor. This weekend, midnight, 1 a.m., 2 a.m. I am waiting, watching, breathe in, breathe out, for my young-adult daughter to finish driving 1,732 miles from Montana to Ohio. She is driving the route by herself. And I am up in the night, tracking her progress via FindMyPhone: Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois. Twelve degrees and snow flurries in East Shannon, South Dakota. God, does South Dakota never end? She’s done this drive before, I keep telling myself. Also: “Don’t forge...

  • Chicago Bulls starters are underwhelming in a 119-103 loss to the Boston Celtics, the team’s 2nd straight defeat

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bulls bench has been a consistent team strength this season, and it provided a boost once again Monday night to keep the Bulls in the game against the Boston Celtics. Despite getting 48 points from the bench — including a near triple-double from forward Thaddeus Young (16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists) — to complement 30 points from Zach LaVine, the Bulls starting lineup was underwhelming from the beginning of their 119-103 loss to the Celtics at the United Center. It was the second straight loss for the Bulls and a bit more disheartening than Saturday’s blowout...

  • James Harden finally asserts himself as Big 3 explodes in fourth quarter to sweep Heat

For now, the Nets are going to have to talent their way through games. For now. They can’t do this forever and expect to win games, let alone an NBA championship. It could be Kevin Durant shooting over each and every defender. It could be James Harden splitting a double team before finding a shooter or dunker, and it could be Kyrie Irving breaking down the defense before pulling up for a jump shot. This is the life the Nets chose when they surrendered depth and assets for a third superstar. But the fourth quarter in Brooklyn’s 98-85 win over Miami is more evidence trading the kitchen sink for ...

  • Tom Thibodeau explains why he’s still not making Immanuel Quickley the starter

As the drumbeat for Immanuel Quickley’s promotion to the starting lineup grows, coach Tom Thibodeau said Monday that his upstart rookie point guard will remain a reserve because it’s better for winning. “We like the group that he’s with right now,” Thibodeau said. “And we think it functions best that way. And so you want to have everybody play to their strengths and also you want to cover up people’s weaknesses. So right now we feel the best opportunity for us to win is doing the things we’re doing.” Quickley is coming off a 31-point eruption in Sunday’s defeat to the Blazers, when he took the...

  • Person to Person: Finding supportive people powers your life

If you want your life to flow more smoothly, take a close look at your “support system.” This system is comprised of those people who help you get things done. Do you have enough dependable, stable people to help you in lots of ways? Or, do you cope by relying on one or two friends too much? While health, money, and education strengthen our efforts, we all need supportive people to get things done. These individuals include: a dependable auto mechanic, doctor, hairdresser, babysitter, and more. “These people don’t magically show up,” declares a mother of four we’ll call Jennifer. “I have activ...

  • Balancing Act: ‘Parents are spinning 8 plates at a time right now.’ Stop shaming them for relying on screen time to make it through a pandemic

CHICAGO – Even before the coronavirus crashed into our lives, Cassandra Kaczocha and her husband, Keith Paddy, were deep into screen time negotiations with their kids. Their daughter, 10, is a competitive gymnast, spending “a part-time job number of hours” at the gym, Kaczocha said. Their son, 13, loves video games, and reasoned that he should be granted the same number of weekly hours to pursue his hobby that his sister gets for hers. “And there’s some validity to that,” Kaczocha said. After consulting their pediatrician and reading reams of research on exposure to blue light and violence in ...

  • This secluded getaway is Georgia’s most wish-listed Airbnb

ATLANTA — While 2020 was largely a year where people stayed put, that didn’t dampen the desire to travel. In fact, people seemed to be putting together post-pandemic travel plans as they browsed Airbnb’s listings throughout 2020. Recently, the vacation rental marketplace unveiled a list of the most wish-listed, unique stays across the nation. The information was gathered based on an Airbnb-commissioned survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults and carried out by ClearPath Strategies from Sept. 15-19, 2020. “After months of spending time indoors, Airbnb has identified a new trend of ‘Wish List Wand...
