Los Angeles (AFP) - A man who repeatedly threatened to kill an Arizona election official was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Monday, as investigators warned of increasing hostility towards poll workers ahead of this year's high-stakes US votes. Joshua Russell, from Ohio, directed numerous expletive-laden tirades against the person chiefly responsible for the smooth running of the 2022 mid-term election in Arizona, the state's department of justice said. "Mr. Russell made three phone calls to the office of then-Secretary of State Katie Hobbs threatening to put her in the ground o...

Washington (AFP) - Police have arrested a man suspected of shooting five people -- one of whom died -- at an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday, authorities in the southern US city said. One person was killed and four were injured when Deion Patterson allegedly opened fire in a hospital waiting room just after midday (1700 GMT). Patterson then allegedly stole a truck that had been left running at a nearby gas station and fled. A manhunt went into the night before Patterson was apprehended outside the city in neighboring Cobb County. "Law enforcement have taken the suspect into custody," Atlanta M...

Washington (AFP) - One in five American adults have a family member who was killed by a gun -- including by suicide -- and a similar percentage said they've been threatened with one, according to a survey released Tuesday. Gun-related violence -- including mass shootings, suicides and accidents -- has become so common in the United States that 84 percent of US adults say they have taken precautions to protect themselves and their families from the danger of being shot, according to health research group KFF, which released the survey. More than one third of those surveyed said they have avoi...

Leesburg (United States) (AFP) - Many are burning out, others fear for their safety: conspiracy theories born in the 2020 election are fueling harassment of poll workers across the United States -- complicating their work and stoking fears of violence in the November 8 midterms. Egged on by baseless claims of fraud from former president Donald Trump and others, many voters are taking matters into their own hands, with officials warning of real consequences for the democratic process. "The only problems we have had, honestly, have been dealing with misinformation," said Richard Keech, deputy re...

Washington (AFP) - The shocking assault of top Democrat Nancy Pelosi's husband at their home has heightened concerns that unconstrained disinformation and toxic political partisanship could spill over into violence around next week's US midterm elections. US security officials say unconstrained disinformation and political vitriol is volatile fuel for attacks, like the one in which a follower of right-wing conspiracy theories apparently sought to kidnap Nancy Pelosi over alleged election "lies." David DePape, who allegedly assaulted Pelosi's 82-year-old husband Paul in their San Francisco home...

Washington (AFP) - When a Donald Trump supporter was killed by police after shooting up an FBI office in the US Midwest, investigators turned to the assailant's social media to confirm a motive they already feared. It turned out he had discussed leading an "insurrection against the people who usurped our government" in revenge for the bureau's raid on the former president's Florida home in August. "I am proposing war," read one post from his since-deleted account on Trump's Truth Social platform, US media reported. "Kill the FBI on sight." In the 21 months since a pro-Trump mob ransacked the U...

Chautauqua (United States) (AFP) - When Emily Sack saw a young man leap at Salman Rushdie on the stage of a cultural center in western New York state, it happened so suddenly that she barely realized she was witnessing an attack on the author's life. Like many other residents of the Chautauqua Institution -- a retreat that hosts educational and cultural programs in a huge park dotted with quaint colonial homes and perched on the shores of gorgeous Lake Chautauqua -- her memory of the attack is a bit of a blur. And yet, she was there on August 12 in the open-air amphitheater for a conference fe...

Washington (AFP) - Firearms have surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of death among American youngsters, with official data showing a strong rise in gun-related homicides such as the killing of 19 children in a Texas school rampage. Overall, 4,368 children and adolescents up to the age of 19 died from firearms in 2020, a rate of 5.4 per 100,000 a dashboard by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed. Homicides made up nearly two-thirds of the gun deaths. By comparison, there were 4,036 deaths linked to motor vehicles, the previous leading cause of death amon...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden on Monday announced new measures cracking down on so-called "ghost guns" with an executive order to increase restrictions on the difficult-to-trace weapons that can be assembled at home. At a White House gathering that brought together families and loved ones of shooting victims, Biden said the number of "ghost guns" reported by the police had increased tenfold between 2016 and 2021. While stressing he was not opposed to the right to bear arms as allowed for in the Second Amendment to the constitution, Biden criticized the powerful National Rifle Associat...

New York (AFP) - Mourners sang and laid flowers Tuesday on Central Park's candlelit memorial to John Lennon on the 40th anniversary of his murder in New York City, as his widow Yoko Ono marked the moment with a call for gun control. "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience," tweeted the 87-year-old artist, who still lives in the Manhattan building where her husband was shot. "After 40 years, Sean, Julian and I still miss him," she added, before quoting the 1971 song she co-wrote with Lennon that became the best-selling single of his solo career. "Imagine all the people living life ...
