A worrying coronavirus mutation is discovered in Washington state — but hasn’t spread
SEATTLE — Three COVID-19 infections diagnosed in Washington in October were caused by virus with a mutation that might boost the respiratory bug’s ability to dodge immune defenses. The mutation, called E484K, is also present in two of the worrisome new viral variants spreading around the globe — those that originated in South Africa and Brazil. But the virus detected in Washington did not have any of the other mutations that characterize those variants, said researchers at the UW Medicine Virology Lab. No other infections with the mutation have been detected since October, though surveillance ...

Jay Wright opened his Zoom conference call with reporters Thursday by declaring, “I’m the happiest guy in the world today.” When the Villanova coach is that happy, you know it has to do with his players getting to play basketball. The Wildcats returned to the practice court for the first time since Jan. 3 after pausing team activities due to the positive COVID-19 tests of two of their players. The program is coming off its third quarantine since September. The second one began on Dec. 26 after Wright tested positive. Then one day after that quarantine ended, the next one began. 'Internal systems issue' again prevents SC from reporting accurate COVID-19 data
COLUMBIA, S.C. — For the second consecutive day, state health officials announced artificially low COVID-19 case counts due to an "internal system issue." DHEC again said it was working to correct the reporting problem and would update the COVID-19 case numbers when it was straightened out. The agency has yet to update Monday's case numbers. Since last March, the state has reported 328,028 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 5,358 coronavirus deaths. South Ca...
