Memo to Netflix viewers: Let the actors speak for themselves. In any language.
If you're going to watch Netflix's French import "Lupin," the latest tasty incarnation of author Maurice Leblanc's smooth criminal introduced in 1905, you might want to conduct a little experiment. For five minutes, try it in English. When you set up your Netflix profile, you probably chose English for your default. Watch and listen. The actors — Omar Sy as the sympathetic thief obsessed with Leblanc's fictional creation and, among key supporting players, Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, his ex-partner — speak French. But their voices are dubbed by English-speaking actors Austin Warren and Lindsay ...

Jazmine Sullivan speaks on her struggles, spiritual growth, and her sultry new release, 'Heaux Tales'
PHILADELPHIA — The ladies were having a girls' night. Philly artist Jazmine Sullivan's mother, Pam, had invited some friends over for a small get-together. Included in the gathering were Jazmine's godmother, Anitra Sasser, and a relative of Sasser's, Donna Anderson. "They came over, and they drank and they was eating, and Donna had something to say," Sullivan recalled with a laugh of the conversation, which was captured on an iPhone. Anderson held nothing back: "Women think, 'Oh no I don't trick, I don't ho, I don't do none of that ...," she said. "Even if you married, you have tricked in your...

A 'homelessness authority' was supposed to get Seattle and its suburbs on the same page. It hasn't
SEATTLE — King County Executive Dow Constantine has been thinking a lot this past year about his first exposure to politics as a child: the Paris peace talks at the end of the Vietnam War. Famously, before the talks could even start, they were held up by a disagreement about the shape of the table the North and South Vietnamese leaders would sit around. It’s been on Constantine’s mind because of a battle closer to home: Who gets a say in how the Seattle region will tackle homelessness for the foreseeable future. A year ago, the county and city of Seattle signed an agreement to set up a “region...

Treasures: Moreau lamp is likely a statement piece from the 1960s
Dear Helaine and Joe: While reading an article in the MetroWest Daily News, I realized that I own an August Moreau lamp titled “Innocents.” I would appreciate more information about the piece. Thank you, M. G.: Dear M. G.: Actually, we would like a little more information too. We do not know how big the lamp is, or how it is signed and where. We do not know how M. G. found the title of this work. But we have our suspicions. Twelve years ago, a reader wrote to inquire about her Auguste Moreau lamp, which was 47 inches high from base to the top of the shade and weighed in at a respectable 34 pou...

For the idled Wild, waiting is the hardest part
This season, under any circumstances, was going to have a unique feel for the Wild. A roster shake-up that shuffled veteran leadership and added a prized prospect — maybe two — to the lineup would have been the major topic. But the temporary overhaul the NHL appears headed for during the coronavirus pandemic would double down on the changes facing the new-look team, setting the Wild up for a season unlike any other. “This is a strange year,” General Manager Bill Guerin said recently on a video call with reporters. “The good thing is that when we get back and when we get out on the rink and dro...

7 legendary Orson Welles movies to pair with Netflix's new 'Mank'
OK, so Orson Welles peaked at 26, but nobody has ever had a better cinematic peak. Welles would be considered a genius if his movie career were judged on how it began, with “Citizen Kane” widely considered the best movie ever made and the one that established American movies as art. Instead, he’s remembered for the end of his career. Having endured a decadeslong fall from that height, he had become a big fat loser who shilled, while drunk, for a crummy vineyard that, in its much-lampooned catchphrase, pledged to “sell no wine before its time.” Either way of looking at Welles shortchanges the f...
