Los Angeles (AFP) - Arizona's Democratic governor on Thursday signed a bill overturning an 1864 law banning abortion, a month after the state's supreme court said the Civil War-era rule was valid. Katie Hobbs' move caps a quick turnaround in the swing state, which is expected to play a crucial role in this year's presidential election between incumbent Joe Biden and Donald Trump. "I am proud to sign this bill and provide a moment of relief for Arizonans," said Hobbs in a video posted on social media. "We still have work to do." When the repeal comes into effect in the summer, terminations will...

Arizona lawmakers on Wednesday repealed the permanent reintroduction of a 160-year-old abortion ban in the US state. In April, the state supreme court allowed the controversial 1864 law to be reinstated. The statute bans nearly all abortions, including those sought by survivors of rape or incest. Exceptions only apply if the life of the woman concerned is at risk. The law also imposes prison terms for doctors and others who aid in abortions. The Democratic governor, Katie Hobbs, must still sign the repeal of the 1864 into law, but this is considered a formality. The 1864 law had been blocked b...

Jacksonville (AFP) - US Vice President Kamala Harris sought to make Donald Trump the face of Florida's strict new abortion ban Wednesday as Democrats hammer the issue ahead of November's presidential election. "Across our nation, we witness a full-on assault, state by state, on reproductive freedom. And understand who's to blame: former president Donald Trump did this," Harris said in a Jacksonville, Florida speech. Florida's harsh new ban took effect Wednesday, outlawing all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy in a state that had been one of the last in the southern United States with a re...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Legislators in Arizona's upper house voted Wednesday to repeal an 1864 law banning abortion, a month after the state's supreme court said the Civil War-era rule was valid. The turnaround was the latest development in the fraught US abortion debate, which is expected to play a huge role in this year's presidential election, a likely rematch between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump. "I'm glad to see the Senate answered my call and voted to repeal the 1864 total abortion ban," the state's Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs wrote on social media. "While this is essential to pr...

"Nous avons vécu une attaque en règle, Etat après Etat, contre les libertés reproductives et nous savons qui en est responsable. C'est l'ancien président Trump qui a fait ça", a asséné la démocrate, colistière du président Joe Biden pour l'élection de novembre, depuis Jacksonville. ...

Monica Kelly was thrilled to learn she was expecting her second child. The Tennessee mother was around 13 weeks pregnant when, according to a lawsuit filed against the state of Tennessee, doctors gave her the devastating news that her baby had Patau syndrome. The genetic disorder causes serious developmental defects and often results in miscarriage, stillbirth, or death within one year of birth. Continuing her pregnancy, doctors told her, could put her at risk of infection and complications that include high blood pressure, organ failure, and death. But they said they could not perform an abor...

Phoenix (AFP) - Piper decided she needed an abortion almost as soon as Arizona judges ruled an 1864 law banning the procedure could be enforced. Having only just found out she was pregnant, what she had really wanted was time to think, but that was a luxury she felt she could not afford. "The laws in Arizona are really dicey right now, so I wasn't sure what would be available to me," said Piper, who wanted to use a pseudonym to discuss her choice about one of the most divisive issues in America. Piper, 30, fell pregnant unexpectedly -- her partner told her he had undergone a vasectomy, but he ...

Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court appeared divided Wednesday on whether Idaho's near-total ban on abortion conflicts with a federal law requiring hospitals to stabilize patients needing emergency care, in a case that carries potentially sweeping national consequences. The hearing comes nearly two years after the conservative-majority bench overturned the national right to terminate a pregnancy, making reproductive rights a pivotal issue that could affect the outcome of the November presidential election. Emotions ran deep outside the court where hundreds of women's rights activists, some...
