Severe turbulence that hit a Singapore Airlines flight from London has resulted in one death and several injuries. What happened on board the Boeing 777-300ER flight to Singapore is still not clear. Airline tracking websites have noted that the aircraft dropped around 1,800 metres in three minutes when it flew into the rough air beyond the Bay of Bengal. Fatalities and serious injuries from turbulence happen rarely. Flight crews can often predict bad weather and rough air in advance and are trained to deal with the effects. The total surpasses the previous annual record of €1.45 billion, made in the year to March 2018, and sits ahead of the €1.905 billion predicted by company analysts. Ryanair's bottom line was boosted by a 9% increase in passenger traffic, combined with a 21% rise in the average fare price. Despite this jump in consumer costs, the airline said it is continuing to reap a "competitive advantage" by keeping fees lower than its EU competitors. Travellers booking with budget airlines often see their arrival at a regional airport and extended journey to their destination as the price they have to pay for a low-cost fare. Fly with a low-cost carrier to Paris and you’ll probably land at Beauvais-Tillé Airport some 85 kilometres northwest of the capital. Book for Milan and you might arrive at Orio al Serio International Airport, closer to the city of Bergamo than to Italy’s fashion capital. But instead of viewing this as an inconvenience, consider using it as a way to explore some of Europe’s unsung cities. Wander canals and sip prosecco...

Airlines have hit back against EU plans to monitor contrails from aircraft, claiming too little is known about their climate impact to regulate them. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says it’s too soon to implement regulations as there are still “gaps” in scientific knowledge about their impact. New EU regulations will see airlines required to measure and report non-CO2 emissions from flights from January 2025. That would include contrails, nitrogen oxides and sulphur. Contrails or condensation trails are created when ice crystals form around tiny particles of carbon emitted ...

The low-cost British airline attributed the results to increasing capacity where demand was highest and making operations more efficient. It says it kept costs stable despite higher fuel prices, 6% inflation per seat, and fa...
