Qantas Airways has agreed to pay 120 million Australian dollars (€74 million) in compensation and a fine for selling tickets on thousands of cancelled flights. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) sued the Sydney-based airline in the Federal Court last year. Airlines have hit back against EU plans to monitor contrails from aircraft, claiming too little is known about their climate impact to regulate them. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says it’s too soon to implement regulations as there are still “gaps” in scientific knowledge about their impact. German national carrier Lufthansa reported its first quarter 2024 earnings on Tuesday, clocking in an operating loss of -€849 million, a steep plunge from Q1 2023's loss of -€273 million euros. However, the group saw its revenue for the first quarter rise 5% year-on-year to €7.4 billion, up from €7 billion in Q1 2023. EasyJet has announced a significant reduction in losses for the six months ending in March, with a pre-tax loss expected to range between £340 and £360 million (€397 and €420 million). Latvian airline Air Baltic plans to resume flights to Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa as soon as Ukraine's airspace reopens, the airline announced on March 26 after a visit to Kyiv's Boryspil airport.
