World leaders are gathering in Paris today to tackle one of the world’s biggest silent killers: dirty cooking fuels. In Africa, where four in five people cook over open fires and basic stoves, it is the second leading cause of premature deaths among women and children. Convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA) at UNESCO headquarters, the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa is set to announce a major sum and solutions to tackle the issue. “I believe if your neighbour’s house is burning, you help them. Africa is our neighbour,” IEA executive director Dr Fatih Birol told Euronews Green ahea...

The European elections are approaching and with them the usual hand-wringing about a lack of interest from the electorate. EU residents are set to benefit from cleaner air in the years to come after lawmakers in the European Parliament voted today (April 24) to introduce stricter standards to measure air pollutants and improved monitoring, revising the bloc’s clean air standards of 2008. Lawmakers backed the Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD), proposed in 2022 by the European Commission, with 381 votes in favour and 225 against, during the last plenary session of this EU mandate. The new rules introduce a zero-pollution goal for 2050 and air quality standards for 2030 that are closer – but not in line with – Wor...

Cities introducing low emissions zones have cleaner air than those without, according to preliminary research by health insurers comparing Belgian cities Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent with other cities. The findings were announced in Brussels today (April 23) during an event on clean cities organised in association with Belgium's presidency of the EU Council ahead of a key vote at the European Parliament tomorrow on the Air and Ambient Quality Directive (AAQD). Low emission zones were introduced in Antwerp and Brussels in 2017 and 2018 respectively, leading to a drop in air pollutants such as bl...

Air pollution is weakening children’s attention span, a new study suggests. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) - a pollutant largely pumped out by road traffic - is linked to poorer attention span in children aged four to eight years old. This is particularly pronounced in boys, according to the researchers at Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Their study, published in the Environment International journal, adds to a growing body of evidence about the negative impact of air pollution during pregnancy and childhood on brain development. Only seven countries in the world breathe ...

Eighteen influential global figures are calling for more robust measures to tackle air pollution ahead of the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings in Washington DC next week. The "Our Common Air" Commission says that airborne toxins are currently a threat to our climate, health, and economies, but that the issue is not yet getting the attention it deserves. It is estimated that air pollution causes seven million premature deaths a year, notably as it is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. "Clean air is not just something that costs money to achieve, but is an asset which can impro...

Too much exposure to bright outdoor lights at night may increase a person's stroke risk, new research suggests. The study involved more than 28,000 people living in a large city in China. Researchers found that people exposed to the highest levels of artificial outdoor light at night had a 43 per cent increased risk of developing cerebrovascular disease, as compared to those with the lowest levels of exposure. Cerebrovascular disease includes stroke and other conditions affecting blood flow to the brain. Previous studies have linked increased exposure to bright, artificial light to the develop...

Only seven countries in the world met safe air pollution levels in 2023, a new report by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir reveals. The World Air Quality Report, released this week, draws on data from more than 30,000 monitoring stations in 134 countries, territories and regions. Of these, 124 were found to breach safe levels of PM2.5 (fine particulate matter), according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. These microscopic particles, measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter, can be inhaled deep into our lungs and even reach our bloodstreams. They have been linked to hea...
