Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings Dies At 84, Narrowing Democratic House Majority To 2 Votes
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Florida), a former federal judge and long-time civil rights advocate, died Tuesday at 84. Hasting’s chief of staff Lale Morrison confirmed the representative’s death in a statement Tuesday night. Hastings death reduces Democrat’s majority to just two seats with five seats awaiting special elections. Hastings was Florida’s first black federal judge and was one of the three first black Floridians elected to Congress in 1992, the first time since post-Civil War reconstruction.
