Trump Plaza implodes in Atlantic City
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. —The congregation gathered early Wednesday at the Ducktown Tavern to deliver last rites for Trump Plaza, the once gilded, later decrepit former casino built by former President Donald Trump. In its final incarnation, 19 seconds of deliberate destruction, Trump Plaza took its place alongside Atlantic City’s most iconic symbols of failure, imploded during an Ash Wednesday breakfast hour, followed by the after party. . From the beach, where several hundred gathered, the Plaza’s 9:07 a.m. final death rattle thudded against the sand until the main tower, already stripped of its ...

Polar bear killed during breeding at Detroit Zoo
DETROIT — A female polar bear at the Detroit Zoo was killed Monday by a male companion who was trying to breed with her, officials said. Scott Carter, the Detroit Zoological Society's Chief Life Sciences Officer, said Anana, 20, and Nuka, 16, had lived together without incident in 2020. “This was completely unexpected and the Detroit Zoo staff is devastated by the loss of Anana in this sudden and tragic event,” Carter said in a statement. The incident was the first time an animal has killed another at the zoo since 1988, officials said Monday. The last instance also involved polar bears. Anana...

Universal Orlando resort sets reopening date for Volcano Bay
ORLANDO, Fla. — Volcano Bay at Universal Orlando has been closed for the season but plans to reopen on Feb. 27. Like Universal Orlando’s other two major theme parks, Volcano Bay is practicing heightened health and safety measures to ensure the well-being of its staff and visitors. SeaWorld begins concerts again, helping the Florida park move toward economic recovery, CEO says
It might feel like a strange new world. The hot ticket to see a theme park concert, nearly one year into the pandemic? It’s not Disney or Universal. It’s SeaWorld. The smaller SeaWorld Orlando is the first theme park to begin a concert series following last year’s theme park closures and reopenings, starting Saturday to coincide with the Seven Seas Food Festival. It’s a move the company’s interim leader Marc Swanson touted as part of the park’s economic recovery from the pandemic. “That’s one more step to kind of getting back to normal,” Swanson said Friday in a phone interview with the Sentin...
Guess what's new in downtown Miami? A full-fledged drive-in movie theater
The dream was always the same. When Nayib Estefan and his wife Lara moved back to Miami in 2012 after 10 years in Los Angeles to raise their newborn son, he missed the repertory theaters in Hollywood where he had been able to watch cult movies he loved — "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," John Waters comedies, Lamberto Bava's "Demons" — projected on the big screen on 35mm film. "I had only seen those movies on VHS, and I couldn't believe how great they looked," Estefan said. "When I moved back, my plan was to open a drive-in, because there was no midnight or cult movie scene in Miami. Also how is ...
My worst moment: Sarah Chalke and the runny nose, the on-stage kiss and the show must go on ... or snot
On the Netflix series “Firefly Lane,” based on the book of the same name, Sarah Chalke stars opposite Katherine Heigl. “It’s about a friendship over the course of 30 years, starting when they are teenagers,” Chalke said. “I play Kate, who is very vulnerable and she doesn’t really fit in, and then this ridiculously gorgeous, charismatic, charming, mysterious person named Tully moves in across the street and we become best friends, and the show follows the choices we make over the course of 30 years.” The series, she said, incorporates both comedy and drama. “I laughed and I cried when I read th...
