Cape Canaveral (AFP) - Boeing on Wednesday launched its very first astronauts bound for the International Space Station aboard a Starliner capsule, which joins a select club of spacecraft to carry humans beyond Earth. The third time turned out to be the charm for the aerospace giant, after two previous bids to fly with crew were aborted late into the countdown, for technical reasons. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, both of whom have two previous spaceflights under their belts, blasted off at 10:52 am (1452 GMT) from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, for a roughly o...

Cape Canaveral (AFP) - Boeing's second attempt at launching a crew aboard its troubled Starliner spaceship was dramatically aborted Saturday with just minutes left on the countdown clock, yet another setback for a program that has faced years of delays. With the astronauts strapped in and ready for liftoff, the test mission to the International Space Station was unexpectedly halted due to reasons that aren't yet clear. United Launch Alliance, responsible for the Atlas V rocket that Starliner sits atop, is now investigating why an "automatic hold" was triggered by its computer with three minute...

Boeing's company’s Starliner capsule was due to rocket away at midday with a pair of test pilots to the International Space Station for a weeklong stay. The test drive should have happened years ago. But problems kept piling up, most recently a leak that went unnoticed until the first launch attempt with a crew in early May. NASA wants a backup to SpaceX, which has been flying astronauts for four years. United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket is providing the lift from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Aircraft maker Boeing has presented a plan to the United States' Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) laying out steps the company intends to take to ramp up quality and safety controls following an incident in January on one of its 737 airplanes. In a statement on Thursday, Boeing chief executive Dave Calhoun said that the company had taken feedback from employees and independent experts into account for the plan, but did not provide information on the concrete measures that would be taken. The FAA had called on Boeing to submit a plan to improve quality controls after a piece of fuselage bl...

New York (AFP) - Boeing has committed to enhanced safety protocols that include more inspectors and new performance benchmarks under a plan demanded by regulators, US air safety authorities said Thursday. The aviation giant presented a comprehensive safety "roadmap" to officials after a near-catastrophic incident on a January Alaska Airlines flight that revived questions about Boeing, following fatal crashes involving its 737 MAX in 2018 and 2019. "Over time this is about systemic change, there is a lot of work to be done," Federal Aviation Administration head Mike Whitaker said at a news conf...
