Massive floods in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state killed at least 60 people and another 101 were reported missing, according to Sunday's toll from local authorities. The state governor said he believed the death toll would only grow as emergency workers were finally able to reach places that were previously inaccessible. In the town of Feliz, 80 kilometres from the state capital, Porto Alegre, a significantly swollen river swept away a bridge that connected it with the neighbouring city of Linha Nova. The floods left a wake of devastation, including landslides, washed-out roads and c...

Talk about a grand finale. Madonna transformed Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro into a sea of her fans on Saturday for the closing show of her latest world tour, The Celebration Tour, which has performed in 80 locations since October. The final concert, announced last March, was free for everyone, and drew the largest crowd of the pop superstar’s four-decade career. Riotur, Rio City Hall’s tourism agency, estimated that 1.6 million people flocked to the beach to get a glimpse of Madonna. That would make the show more than 10 times bigger than Madonna’s previous record attendance of 130,000 a...

Entitled ‘Foreigners Everywhere’, the 2024 Venice Biennale has at its core the exploration of identity. The international show is notably - and for some anachronistically - organised into national pavilions. Prompted by the theme, many countries have chosen to examine ideas of nationhood, belonging and foreignness. Collectively, however, this also raises the question of how valid the Biennale’s division of exhibitors into national showrooms continues to be. ‘You are always, deep down inside, a foreigner’The 60th edition of the international exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, takes its tit...

Having a safe climate is becoming more of a human right globally with this week's European court decision that says countries must better protect people from climate change, something warming-hit residents of the Global South long knew, said former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. Robinson, who was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, praised Tuesday’s mixed court decision as precedent-setting and change-triggering. The European Court of Human Rights sided with Swiss senior women saying their government wasn't doing enough to protect them from climate shocks, but dismissed...

Cotton clothes, towels and bed sheets from H&M and Zara are “stained” by illegal deforestation and human rights abuses, according to a new investigation. UK-based investigative NGO Earthsight has traced 800,000 tonnes of cotton from the giant Western retailers to Brazilian estates where land grabbing, violence and corruption are rife. This cotton is exported to several manufacturers in Asia, which together made nearly 250 million items of clothing and homeware in a year for global stores of H&M, Zara and its sister brands. “These firms talk about good practice, social responsibility and certif...

2023 was the hottest year on record. Last year's monsoons in India have claimed the lives of more than 2000 people, South Korea and Japan saw unprecedented levels of flooding, widespread heat waves spread through Europe and Latin America, and wildfires raged through North America. This should have been a wake-up call. Instead, oil and gas production continues to soar, and with it billions of dollars in profit for the fossil fuel industry. This year, over a 12-month period, for the first time on record, global heating has exceeded temperatures of 1.5 degrees Celsius. In 2015, 196 countries sign...

Tropical forest loss in Brazil and Colombia fell dramatically last year but fires and a rise in tree felling elsewhere severely counteracted this progress. In 2023, the tropics lost 3.7 million hectares of primary forest - an area just smaller than Bhutan, or the equivalent of losing 10 football fields per minute. That is around 9 per cent less tropical tree cover lost than in 2022, according to an annual survey by the research organisation the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the University of Maryland. Global tree loss would have been much higher without improvements in Brazil and Colombi...

French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian Lula da Silva will launch a diesel-powered submarine built in Brazil with French technology at the Itaguai shipyard outside Rio de Janeiro. The officials are meeting this week to revive the relationship between the countries after years of frictions with former President Jair Bolsonaro. Macron and Da Silva also announced...
