Earlier this year, President Emmanuel Macron brought in huge budget cuts to curb France’s exorbitant spending. In February, €10 billion in cuts were announced, in addition to a €16 billion drop in spending that the 2024 budget had already accounted for. While much of the budget cuts have been aimed – controversially – at environmental and medical transport, one of the key areas facing cuts is also the culture sector. Economy minister Bruno Le Maire has announced that France’s culture sector will have its annual budget slashed by €204 million, with the main area to be cut in “artistic creation”...

Jeremy Hunt delivered his Spring Budget to Members of Parliament in the House of Commons in London on Wednesday afternoon. Against a difficult economic backdrop, the announcement was devoid of major giveaways, with the Chancellor erring on the side of fiscal prudence. Cut to national insuranceHunt has committed to cutting National Insurance contributions by 2p from April, a measure that will affect 27 million workers. On 6 March Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will deliver his tax and spending plans for the UK, in what is likely to be the biggest fiscal announcement before the next General Election. The Budget comes not only against a backdrop of stifling tax burdens but also staggering public debt, placing the Treasury in a politically sticky position. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), tax revenues as a share of national income in the UK are currently on track to hit 37.7% in 2028 to 2029, the highest level seen since World War II. To alleviate this load, Hunt has been publicly planning for what ...
