Los Angeles (AFP) - The house where Jeff Bezos founded online shopping mammoth Amazon is up for sale, offering one lucky buyer the chance to own a piece of internet history. Bezos and his then-wife MacKenzie Scott were renting the single-story, three-bedroom home near Seattle in the mid 1990s when they began selling books online from the garage. Amazon lore holds that the garage was outfitted only with a computer, basic office supplies and a desk constructed from a door bought from a home improvement center. Originally the company shipped only books -- Amazon says the first one was titled "Flu...

Babcock Ranch (United States) (AFP) - When Hurricane Ian churned past her home in southwest Florida last year, Mary Frisbee shrugged off worries. She watched TV and surfed the internet. That's because she and her husband live in Babcock Ranch, a town near the US Gulf Coast that was created with two imperatives: homes have to be built sustainably, and must be able to withstand hurricanes, a constant menace. The community takes nature deeply into account. To avoid flooding caused by storms, Babcock Ranch is built some nine meters (30 feet) above sea level. Town planners also preserved wetlands i...

Surfside (United States) (AFP) - The Florida town of Surfside held a memorial ceremony Friday for 98 people who died exactly a year ago when a seaside condominium collapsed, with relatives of the deceased, rescue workers and politicians on hand. The tribute was held at the spot where part of the 12-story Champlain Towers South building once stood in this town north of Miami Beach. People taking part in the ceremony cried, hugged and clapped as relatives of victims took turns giving speeches. "I know what it means to feel profound loss. And one year later, time has not healed my broken heart. L...

Miami (AFP) - Survivors and families of people who died in last year's collapse of a beachfront condo building near Miami have reached a settlement of at least $997 million, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said Wednesday. "The settlement right now is $997 million. There will be approximately another hundred million dollars that we will recover for the victims," said attorney Carlos Silva. Part of Champlain Towers South, a 12-story building built in 1981 in Surfside, a town north of Miami Beach, came tumbling down on June 24, 2021 as dozens of residents slept inside. Except for a teenager rescued h...

Washington (AFP) - Blocks from the White House, an unassuming edifice in downtown Washington that once held offices used by the US Department of Justice is set to be converted into homes for hundreds of people. The transformation of the vacant office space is among a surge of "adaptive reuse" projects that swept the US property market in 2021, where developers bought hotels and offices that were struggling to get business and announced plans to turn them into apartments. "The market spoke, and it said the value was greater for a conversion than for it continuing as office space," said Michael ...

Washington (AFP) - Construction projects started in the hot US housing market jumped sharply in June, according to government data Tuesday, offering hope more homes will come on the market and ease the supply crunch. Housing starts increased 6.3 percent compared to May surging to an annual rate of over 1.6 million units, seasonally adjusted, the Commerce Department reported. And new construction of single-family homes also jumped 6.3 percent to nearly 1.2 million annualized, according to the report. Any relief will be welcome in the US market which has boomed throughout the pandemic, driven by...

Washington (AFP) - Rescuers are still searching for survivors in rubble of the collapsed Florida apartment tower, but pressure is building -- from families of missing residents to the state's governor -- for answers on how such a disaster could have occurred. A wing of the oceanfront complex suddenly pancaked on itself around 1:30 am (05:30 GMT) Thursday, with 55 apartments collapsing in a cloud of dust, leaving 159 people still missing on Friday. Completed in 1981, Champlain Towers South was due to be recertified this year in line with Miami-Dade county safety regulations -- which require a r...

Surfside (United States) (AFP) - The Florida apartment building that collapsed in the middle of the night was undergoing construction work ahead of a safety review, and was built on a site known to have subsided -- two among many factors set for scrutiny as investigators seek to explain the disaster. Completed in 1981, Champlain Towers South was due to be recertified this year in line with Miami-Dade county safety regulations -- which require a review every 40 years -- and roof work was ongoing as part of that process. County officials confirmed work was being done on the waterfront complex --...

Washington (AFP) - American homebuilders got back to work in earnest last month after bad weather slowed construction in February, as new housing starts jumped 19.4 percent, the Commerce Department said Friday. New construction projects started in March rose to a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 1.74 million, 37 percent higher than the pace in March 2020 and beating analysts' expectations as homebuilders worked to keep up with buyer demand amid a boom in the US housing market. Housing permits, a more volatile indicator of projects in the pipeline, also outperformed, rising 2.7 percent above ...
