Bulgaria and Poland’s national energy and climate plans (NECPs) are insufficient to make a fair contribution towards meeting EU efforts to limit global heating and ensure a socially fair transition towards a net-zero economy, according to an assessment by the European Commission. The EU executive has been analysing draft energy and climate plans (NECPs) that member states are required to finalise by the end of June, setting out how they intend to comply with the bloc’s 2030 targets, including the overarching goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions to 55% below 1990 levels. Warsaw and Sofia bo...

After years of negotiations to join the Schengen area, Romania and Bulgaria now have free access for travellers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone. The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, it was comprised of 23 of th...

April is set to be an exciting month for Romania and Bulgaria. On 31 March, the Balkan nations started the process of joining the Schengen Area as controls were lifted at air and sea borders. Discussions about lifting controls at land borders - which would see the two countries properly join the Schengen Area - are still ongoing. While both nations have been members of the European Union since 2007, they are still obliged to show passports upon entry to other EU countries, unlike many other European citizens. In 2024, border controls for the two countries will be simplified and it’s likely man...

Bulgaria and Romania joined Europe's Schengen area of free movement on Sunday, joining the rest of Europe travelling freely by air and sea without border checks. The admission to the zone comes after a thirteen-year wait. The membership is partial, however, as a veto by Austria means the new membership will not apply to land routes, which Vienna argued would lead to more asylum seekers travelling into Europe. The Schengen zone will now comprise of 29 members – 25 of the 27 European Union member states as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Romania's government said Schengen...

In recent years, the issue of antisemitism has been taken more seriously around the world, especially as hate against Jews keeps rising. The adoption of national plans to combat antisemitism and the appointment of special envoys for monitoring and combating antisemitism have displayed an increased sincerity on the part of leaders in Europe, North America and elsewhere in dealing with one of the oldest and fiercest hatreds in history. However, few have gone past the declaratory into the operational, and taken such a holistic approach, as the Republic of Bulgaria. Taking matters seriouslyIn 2017...

Leijtens and Bulgarian Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov had previously inspected the guarding of Bulgaria's land border with Turkey, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reported. Bulgaria has a "very important" role in guarding the EU's external borders, Leijtens em...

Two Russian citizens suspected of spying on behalf of Moscow were banned from entering the European Union by Bulgarian authorities on Monday. The two were identified by Bulgaria’s agency for national security as Vladimir Nikolayevich Gorochkin, 39, and Tatiana Anatolievna Gorochkina, 37. They will be banned from EU entry for five years.
