If you’re swiping on dating apps for hours, you’re not alone — and a new lawsuit claims it’s by design. Dating apps such as Tinder and Hinge are intentionally addictive, a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in California on Valentine’s Day claims. Hidden algorithms push users to stay on the apps and “gamify dating” — counterintuitive to the apps’ intended purpose to help people find connections and form relationships, six plaintiffs contend in the lawsuit. “The truth is the apps are designed to be addictive,” according to the filing. “Match’s business model depends on generating retur...

ST. LOUIS — Agribusiness giant Bayer is asking its employees to volunteer for severance packages as the company readies for layoffs and navigates a shift to a "new operating model." The move, announced in an email to workers last week, comes after years of financial turmoil and months of recent descriptions from Bayer of an upcoming push to restructure — and trim — its personnel. It was not immediately clear how many of Bayer's St. Louis-area jobs could be slashed amid the corporate overhaul of the life sciences conglomerate, nor the timeline for making the cuts. The company said Tuesday that ...

LOUIS — Build-A-Bear Workshop is demanding a jury trial after being served a lawsuit claiming the St. Louis toy manufacturer’s latest plush line, Skoosherz, is too similar to stuffed toy brand Squishmallows. Last month, Squishmallows’ parent company, California-based Kelly Toys Holdings and its affiliated companies, sued Build-A-Bear and other plush toy retailers over alleged infringement of its trade dress rights, which protect a product’s appearance, shape, labeling, color and design. Build-A-Bear filed a responding lawsuit Monday, asking the court to declare that Squishmallows’ trade dr...

In the months since the Federal Trade Commission sued Amazon over allegations of anti-competitive and monopolistic behavior, the two parties have debated the schedule, the scope and the rationale of the case itself. Amazon asked a federal judge in Seattle to dismiss the case in December, arguing the business practices in question have lowered prices for consumers and are common across the retail industry. Amazon described the FTC's lawsuit as an "attack" and an "effort to hobble one of America's most consumer-focused businesses." The FTC responded Tuesday, asking U.S. District Judge John Chun ...
