Officials have said London’s flood defence walls will need to be half a metre higher in the future to protect against climate change. The announcement came as they marked the 40th anniversary of the Thames Barrier, which defends the capital against flooding. Though initially intended to protect London until 2030, the moveable barrier and the city’s wider flood defences will function until 2070, the UK’s Environment Agency expects. But sea levels are projected to rise by around a metre by 2100 and storms are becoming increasingly intense due to climate change. This, officials have said, means g...

The Catalonia region is set to ease restrictions on water use for a wide area, including its capital Barcelona, after recent rainfall palliated a prolonged drought, authorities have announced. In February, Catalonia declared a drought emergency when its reservoirs fell to under 16 per cent capacity after nearly three years of below-average rainfall. Steady rain in recent weeks, however, has boosted reserves to nearly 25 per cent. Spain's reservoirs overall are at a far more promising 66 per cent full. The loosened restrictions mean that some 6 million people will now see individual use limits ...

People in Europe are more worried about natural disasters than armed conflicts according to a new study. The study by Debating Europe, the citizen engagement unit of think tank Friends of Europe, comes just a month before the bloc heads to the polls for the European Elections. More than 2,000 people across seven EU countries - Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden - were asked what they thought were the most pressing issues currently facing Europe. Topics included climate change, democracy, inclusive and sustainable growth, and safety and defence. Climate change was a consi...

Pakistan has recorded its wettest April since 1961, with more than double the usual rainfall for the month, the country’s national weather centre has announced. The Asian nation experienced days of extreme weather in April that killed scores of people as well as destroying property and farmland. Experts said Pakistan witnessed heavier rains because of climate change. Last month’s rainfall for Pakistan was a 164 per cent increase from the usual level for April, Pakistan’s national weather centre says. The intense downpours affected the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southwest...

Massive floods in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state have killed at least 75 people over the last seven days, and another 103 were reported missing, local authorities have announced. At least 155 people were injured, while damage from the rains forced more than 88,000 people from their homes. Approximately 16,000 took refuge in schools, gymnasiums and other temporary shelters. The floods left a wake of devastation, including landslides, washed-out roads and collapsed bridges across the state. Operators reported electricity and communications cuts. More than 800,000 people are without a ...

The Isles of Scilly are 140 islands, 28 miles off the Cornish coast. Five islands are inhabited with a population of just over 2,000 people, the southernmost settled one being St. Agnes. Due to their position at the end of the North Atlantic Drift, they are bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and can often feel sub-tropical. They don't generally experience the hot and cold temperature swings of the rest of the UK. Instead, with their exquisite blue seas, green landscapes and sparkling white beaches, the Isles of Scilly feel more Mediterranean, although perhaps not as warm as Cornwall....

Antarctic animals are at risk of being ‘sunburnt’ as the ozone hole opens for longer, scientists have warned, and climate change could be to blame. As if the impact of global heating on sea ice weren’t bad enough, penguins, seals and other wildlife are also being exposed to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation during their summer. Ozone gas forms a protective layer in the Earth’s upper stratosphere. The realisation that some chemicals - primarily chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used as refrigerants - were depleting it led to a major intervention in 1987: the Montreal Protocol. It is widely considered...

G7 countries have agreed to phase out coal power during the first half of the 2030s. The Environment, Energy and Climate G7 meeting concluded on Tuesday at the Palace of Venaria in Turin. In a statement issued at the end of the two-day conference, the G7 countries said they have jointly agreed to "phase out existing unabated coal power generation in our energy systems during the first half of 2030s or in a timeline consistent with keeping a limit of 1.5C temperatu...

Europe’s cities are facing the impacts of climate change ever more regularly and severely. After 2023’s record summer heat, flooding and heatwaves, the need to invest in resilience has never been clearer. A new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) has taken stock of adaption across Europe’s urban centres, looking at what actions cities are taking and what is already working. It finds that almost all European cities are using nature-based solutions as their tool of choice to improve resilience. Of the 19,000 climate action plans surveyed, 91 per cent included options like maintaini...
