  • Elon Musk trolls GM, Chrysler on Twitter. Ford CEO responds with 1 word

Just one word. That's all Ford CEO Jim Farley used to respond to Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Friday. "Tesla & Ford are the only American carmakers not to have gone bankrupt out of 1000’s of car startups. Prototypes are easy, production is hard & being cash flow positive is excruciating," Musk tweeted Thursday. Farley retweeted Musk early Friday saying only, "Respect." Reaction on Twitter has been swift with likes, retweets and spicy comments. Musk, of course, is quietly acknowledging the bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler, now part of Stellantis. Staying afloat during the Great Recession a...

  • Hulu celebrating ’90s era TV with ‘Blossom,’ ‘Felicity’ and ‘My So-Called Life’

What’s old seems to always be new in the emulative television business as the boom of reboot, remakes and revivals continues. But when it comes to the 1990s, Hulu is celebrating the era with a new documentary about the pop culture era — and a few original series of the day. Along with the March 12 release of “Punky Brewster” actress Soleil Moon Frye’s “Kid 90” documentary, which showcases the lives of the actress and her famous friends during the decade, the Disney-owned streaming platform is rolling out full seasons of throwback shows such as “Blossom,” “Felicity” and “My So-Called Life.” The...

  • Television Q&A: Is Discovery+ replacing programming on cable TV?

You have questions. I have some answers. Q: Is the Discovery+ streaming channel replacing regular programming on cable TV? On every channel I watch on TV, it is inundated with the Discovery+ boasting exclusive programming with most of the channels that are on regular cable TV. Does that mean that programs like “Ghost Adventures,” several of the programs on the Food channel and programs on HGTV will not be showing any new programming or even repeats? People who are on fixed incomes, like I am, cannot afford a new streaming service, but also do not want to lose the programs on regular cable. A: ...

  • Marines knew infantryman shared extremist content online months before investigation, records show

SAN DIEGO — When Marine Corps leaders first found out a Camp Pendleton-based infantryman was claiming to be chairman of a nationalist organization and was sharing extremist material on social media, they counseled him to leave the group and remove some his posts but kept him among their ranks and sent him on deployment, recently released documents show. Six months later — one day after the San Diego Union-Tribune asked about the Marine, then-Lance Cpl. Thomas Cade Martin — the Corps launched a formal investigation that determined his actions violated military rules against extremism, reduced h...

  • September date set for 73rd Emmys show

The Television Academy and CBS have picked a date to roll out some version of a red carpet for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards. The annual TV awards show will take place Sunday, Sept. 19, the partners said Tuesday. Last year’s Emmys aired on ABC as the first of the major awards shows to pull off a live telecast amid the coronavirus pandemic with nominees beamed in from remote locations. This year’s CBS show is also set to stream live and on-demand on the new Paramount+ streaming service set to go live Thursday. The Emmy Awards last aired on CBS in 2017 with host Stephen Colbert. There was no im...

  • Ebony, the voice of Black America for 75+ years, set for digital relaunch Monday

Ebony, the Chicago-born magazine that served as the voice of Black America for more than 75 years, is set for a digital rebirth Monday under new owners. Bought out of bankruptcy for $14 million in December by Louisville-based Bridgeman Sports and Media, a company owned by retired Milwaukee Bucks forward Ulysses “Junior” Bridgeman, Ebony will relaunch with a startup mentality, a lean operation and lofty aspirations. The storied publication’s print format and its Chicago roots will be relegated to the past. “We’re going to ask for grace, because we did this quickly,” said Michele Ghee, 54, a med...

  • Heidi Stevens: Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen turn an unlikely friendship into a deeply personal podcast. Their timing is perfect

It’s a pleasure, in an age dominated by sound bites and tweets and graceless nicknames, to listen to the likes of Bruce Springsteen, a resolute poet, and Barack Obama, an elegant orator, discuss our nation’s past and present, constructs and character. The singer-songwriter and the former president of the United States have teamed up for a new podcast called “Renegades: Born in the USA.” The first two episodes are available on Spotify now. “You can’t get to where you want to go if you don’t know where you are,” Obama says toward the end of the second episode, “American Skin: Race in the United ...

  • Television Q&A: Will 'Younger' be returning for another season?

You have questions. I have some answers. Q: Can you tell me if the TV show “Younger”, starring Sutton Foster, will return for a seventh season? A: It will, but in a new location at first. Paramount+, the revamped version of streaming service CBS All Access, will have the seventh and final season of the series at a date to be announced. Later this year, after the Paramount+ premiere, the seventh season will also be shown on TV Land, the home of the show’s first six seasons. • 'Ted Lasso': What we know about next season, Kansas City connections, those biscuits

Everyone was skeptical of "Ted Lasso." After all, it was based on a TV commercial with a one-note premise: Kansas football coach is transplanted to England to coach a sport he knows nothing about: their version of football, aka soccer. Then people started watching the series and realized there was far more to it, thanks in large part to its co-creator and star, Jason Sudeikis, the "Saturday Night Live" alum who grew up in Overland Park. Now that "Ted Lasso" and Sudeikis are vying for two Golden Globes on Feb. 28 — for best comedy TV series and best actor — the most-watched show on Apple TV+ ha...
