Shook had been the only survivor of the six shooting victims. Shook was 38. He died at Atrium Health Care in Charlotte after he was airlifted from Wednesday’s shooting scene, Gast said. • Trudy Rubin: A royal game of thrones in Jordan unnerves the Middle East

The Shakespearean drama that just erupted in the Mideast kingdom of Jordan — involving an angry monarch, a spurned prince and an alleged coup plot — was astonishing for several reasons. First, because Americans tend to take the kingdom for granted, a moderate monarchy, short on resources but with an educated population at peace with Israel, with whom it shares a very long border, and an ally of the United States. And second, because — although the Jordanian royal court is rife with enough intrigue to fill several seasons of "The Crown" — those machinations rarely explode in public as they did ...

  • ‘Thank God I’m safe’: NRA leader sought refuge from public outrage aboard yacht after mass school shootings

NRA leader Wayne LaPierre says he faced an unprecedented “security threat” in the wake of bloody rampages at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut and a Parkland, Florida, high school — and had to seek refuge aboard his Hollywood producer friend’s 108-foot yacht. In a chutzpah-rich deposition, the politically powerful gun rights advocate said the fancy vessel christened “The Illusion” was one of the few places he felt safe from the national outrage that erupted after the slaughter of innocent children with military-grade firearms. “They simply let me use it as a security retreat because they kn...

Biden administration receives extension on decision to release Trump taxesThe Biden administration again asked a federal judge for another month to decide whether to turn over former President Donald Trump’s tax returns to Congress. In a court filing Wednesday, the Treasury Department said it was still weighing how to respond to a subpoena by House Democrats seeking six years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns. U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden later granted the extension to April 30. Earlier this month, he had delayed the deadline to March 31 from March 3. After the previous exten...

  • On March For Our Lives anniversary, advocates, lawmakers call for Senate changes

WASHINGTON — On the third anniversary of the 2018 March For Our Lives demonstrations around the country, Parkland parents, former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students and members of Congress want the U.S. Senate to change its rules to allow gun control legislation to become law with a simple majority. On Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Ted Deutch, who represents Parkland, said he supports a return to a “talking filibuster,” forcing senators to show up in person on the Senate floor to oppose bills that do not have the support of at least 60 senators. Recently passed House bills that would exp...
