  • Dr. Seuss pulls six books over racist imagery

New York (AFP) - They are beloved by generations of early readers for their wacky rhyming tales and mischievous plotlines, but six Dr. Seuss books are being pulled because of imagery now considered racist. Dr. Seuss Enterprises -- the publisher of the bestselling children's books -- announced Tuesday that it is taking the six titles, which include "If I Ran the Zoo" and "The Cat's Quizzer," out of print. The move comes as criticism grows in the United States over the way minority communities have been portrayed in many of the author's books. Dr. Seuss Enterprises said it had made the decision ...

  • September date set for 73rd Emmys show

The Television Academy and CBS have picked a date to roll out some version of a red carpet for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards. The annual TV awards show will take place Sunday, Sept. 19, the partners said Tuesday. Last year’s Emmys aired on ABC as the first of the major awards shows to pull off a live telecast amid the coronavirus pandemic with nominees beamed in from remote locations. This year’s CBS show is also set to stream live and on-demand on the new Paramount+ streaming service set to go live Thursday. The Emmy Awards last aired on CBS in 2017 with host Stephen Colbert. There was no im...

  • Review: Amy Poehler’s ‘Moxie’ lacks the very courage it champions

“If you keep your head down, he’ll move on and bother somebody else,” 16-year-old Vivian advises the new girl at school who has been bullied by a particularly odious classmate. “Thanks for the advice,” comes the response, “but I’m going to keep my head up. High.” That brief exchange is enough to ignite Vivian’s feminist awakening in “Moxie,” a sincere if ultimately empty coming-of-ager directed by Amy Poehler for Netflix, based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu. A smart, quiet kid who mostly fades into the background and was voted “most obedient” by her peers, Vivian’s first ac...

  • Chicago blues master Corky Siegel is feeling good and ready to jam with you — even if that’s via livestream

CHICAGO — Corky Siegel feels fine. “Terrific on all counts,” he says. “Just terrific.” That is good to hear and it is always good to talk to Siegel, a Chicago treasure and a man with a million stories from a lifetime filled with music. He is 77, near the same age as new White Sox manager Tony La Russa and a great many other people but, as ever, his voice is filled with youthful enthusiasm. And so it was that for a while last week, that Siegel was distracted from the details of an upcoming and innovative performance, which he intriguing calls “better than a live concert,” and pleasantly returne...

  • What to stream: Where to find Golden Globe winners

The Golden Globe awards, and especially their governing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, came under fire this year, after years of jokes at the expense of the small and mysterious group of journalists who throw Hollywood’s hottest (and tipsiest) party. Long-simmering accusations of studio bribery and questions about the organization’s lack of racial diversity came to a head after the nominations were announced, culminating in an investigative series in the Los Angeles Times. Though the HFPA promises to institute change, they still had to put on their usually freewheeling, star-st...

  • Movie review: 'The Truffle Hunters' is a cinematic delicacy as rare as the truffle itself

The documentary “The Truffle Hunters” offers a glimpse into the world of high-stakes truffle hunting in Italy, with an approach is artful, thoughtful and at times, even whimsical. The film, which has earned a spot on the documentary Oscars shortlist, is co-directed by Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw, who also served as the film’s cinematographer. The pair previously collaborated on Dweck’s 2018 film “The Last Race,” a tribute to Long Island’s last stock car race track, which becomes an almost abstract cinematic exploration of rumbling diesel engines and exhaust fumes. On the surface, it woul...

  • Elizabeth Wellington: The pandemic has robbed us of spontaneity. Here's how to get it back

PHILADELPHIA — Life's most delicious moments never happen on schedule. They don't send Google invites. They never text to say they're running late. I'm thinking about all of those random times I weaved in and out of crowds at outdoor festivals, sat in cafés or walked home from work when I just happened upon a friend. A few beats later, I was headed to an afterparty hosted by Questlove, dashing in and out of stores buying denim jumpsuits I didn't need or headed to a happy hour where I laughed into the night. A year into the coronavirus pandemic, I'm grieving all that is impromptu and impetuous....
