Stand still anywhere in The Netherlands and before long cyclists will whizz past you demonstrating all manner of human functions. Getting changed, holding hands, carrying a cello, chair or chum - the list goes on. Is there anything the deft Dutch can’t accomplish on two wheels? But though they might seem to co-cycle with all the natural agility of bees in a hive, the reality is that much goes on behind the scenes to make this flow accessible, safe, environmentally friendly, and inclusive. Here’s what other European countries can learn. UK drivers could save over €150 and win prizes for giving ...

Drivers in the UK who give up their car next month could save around €150 for their effort and even win a prize. The initiative comes from Possible, a climate action charity based in London, which is seeking to prise motorists away from their vehicles with its ‘Going Car Free Challenge’ in June. It might seem like a small step, but transport produces over a quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions, with private cars the biggest contributor. “This challenge aims to show people across the country (or even the world) that going without a car is already possible with a little initiative in places that...

Zaragoza city council announced last week that it wants to make insurance mandatory for all cyclists and electric scooter users. The measure was proposed by the far-right party Vox and agreed to by the conservative People’s Party (PP). They say they want to end the ‘legal uncertainty’ when a cyclist is involved in an accident. If the measure passes, the northeastern Spanish city would be the first in Europe to force cyclists to take out civil liability insurance. Cyclists slam proposed mandatory insuranceCycling organisations have come out strongly against the idea. “Zaragoza would be an excep...

Berlin (dpa) — A curved frame and wide balloon tires — these are the most obvious features of cruiser bikes. This type was invented in the US and has been around for about a century, but it remains a niche product with some manufacturers. One innovation that might help sell more of them is electrification. The French brand Bocyclo (formerly United Cruiser) sells its cruiser bikes as e-bikes once they’re retrofitted by German electric motor specialist Pendix. We tested a model called the Beach Cruiser. Bocyclo managing director Denis Veyrenche thinks the bike will mainly be used in cities. Howe...
