Poland is joining a Czech initiative to procure 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine from countries outside the EU, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on Thursday. Warsaw not only wanted to offer financial support, but also to help with the logistics, he said at a meeting with his counterparts from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia in the so-called Visegrad Group format. The aim, Sikorski said, was to get the ammunition to where it was needed on the front line. A court in Poland has upheld a lawsuit by environmentalists against the Turów open-cast coal mine. A regional administrative court in Warsaw on Wednesday annulled a positive environmental impact assessment issued in the autumn of 2022. This was the basis for Poland's extending the concession for the operation of the mine until 2044. France has agreed to support the Czech initiative to procure about 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said after a meeting with his Czech counterpart Petr Pavel on Tuesday in Prague. The project is very useful and France will take part in it, Macron said. Ministers from both countries are now called on to suggest ways to implement it. The initiative involves looking for ammunition wherever it is available, Macron explained.
