Foreign ministers from NATO countries are gathering in Prague, Czechia, today and tomorrow (30-31 May). Over them looms the major decision of who should lead the transatlantic alliance in the coming years. Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg, who took office in 2014, has already seen his term extended four times, and is due to step down on 1 October. Allies have nearly converged on a choice, but there are still obstacles in the way. Their decision comes at a key time for the transatlantic military alliance, as it faces up to the threat of an increasingly belligerent Russia and a second Trump presidency....

Soldiers in the German armed forces will no longer be required to present proof of coronavirus vaccinations in future, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday. A technical review by the authorities in the military, in conjunction with a vote by the Military Medical Advisory Board last week, has resulted in a move away from the obligation, a spokeswoman told dpa. Germany's military, known as the Bundeswehr, will still offer voluntary vaccinations to soldiers but no longer mandate them. Regulations require soldiers to be vaccinated against a whole range of diseases unless there are special health...

Brussels is attempting to bolster its military credentials given the Ukraine war and possible second Trump presidency – and the next EU executive, due to take office in November, may well appoint a dedicated defence commissioner. “Six more are in the pipeline,” EU High Representative Josep Borrell told the Schuman Forum in Brussels, after the bloc signed security and defence deals with Moldova and Norway. “We want to create a network...

Lithuania's government wants to extend the current excess profits tax imposed on banks for another year. The Cabinet in Vilnius decided on Wednesday to keep the regulation introduced last year in force until 2025. Lithuanian media reports suggest the additional revenue for the Treasury will be used to finance rising defence spending, which is to be increased to 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the coming years. The parliament of the Baltic EU and NATO country still has to approve the plan. Under the current regulations, banks must pay an additional statutory levy of 60% in 2023 and 2024 o...
