Foreign ministers from NATO countries are gathering in Prague, Czechia, today and tomorrow (30-31 May). Over them looms the major decision of who should lead the transatlantic alliance in the coming years. Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg, who took office in 2014, has already seen his term extended four times, and is due to step down on 1 October. Allies have nearly converged on a choice, but there are still obstacles in the way. Their decision comes at a key time for the transatlantic military alliance, as it faces up to the threat of an increasingly belligerent Russia and a second Trump presidency....

The EU has half a dozen more defence deals planned, after signing two with Moldova and Norway in recent days, the bloc’s most senior diplomat said today (29 May). Brussels is attempting to bolster its military credentials given the Ukraine war and possible second Trump presidency – and the next EU executive, due to take office in November, may well appoint a dedicated defence commissioner. “Six more are in the pipeline,” EU High Representative Josep Borrell told the Schuman Forum in Brussels, after the bloc signed security and defence deals with Moldova and Norway. “We want to create a network...

The idea that the European Union has created or is creating a pan-European army that will conscript citizens from member states is often used to attack the bloc’s leadership and general direction. It’s typically peddled by right-wing parties and Eurosceptics active on social media to accuse the EU of attacking its members’ sovereignty. But many proponents of "ever closer union" also invoke the idea, arguing that a European army as a way the continent can better defend itself and reduce its reliance on the US. One of the best examples of EU army scare stories came during the Brexit debate, when...

Two of the frigates have been launched and are currently undergoing sea trials before being handed over to Greece, while the third had its keel attached just this April. Frigates will not be ready for service until 2025 and 2026. Parts of the ships are being built at the Salamis Shipyards, on the Greek island of Salamis, with the advanced defence tec...

Coalition between her centre-right European People's Party (EPP) and Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia is a definite option, European Commission incumbent president Ursula von der Leyen told the Eurovision five-way party leader debate today (23 May), clarifying that the Italian prime minister fulfils three criteria for future partners: she is pro-EU, against Russia's Vladimir Putin and for the rule of law. The EPP is the only mainstream party that has not signed a declaration pledging not to cooperate with far-right forces such as the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the Identi...

The drill is called “Northern Frog” and takes place around a former soviet military airfield. Close to the landing strip, infantry troops from NATO-partner France fortify trenches. Politicians in the UK are concerned about the effects of 'debanking' on the country’s security and economic prosperity. In a letter featured in the Telegraph newspaper on Wednesday, the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Harriett Baldwin warned against the effects of 'debanking' on SMEs, pawnbrokers and defence firms. Some lenders retract their services because they are worried about the ethical impl...

Officials have said London’s flood defence walls will need to be half a metre higher in the future to protect against climate change. The announcement came as they marked the 40th anniversary of the Thames Barrier, which defends the capital against flooding. Though initially intended to protect London until 2030, the moveable barrier and the city’s wider flood defences will function until 2070, the UK’s Environment Agency expects. But sea levels are projected to rise by around a metre by 2100 and storms are becoming increasingly intense due to climate change. This, officials have said, means g...
