German trains will soon feature new cabins designed for greater privacy as part of a multi-billion euro revamp. State railway operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) has unveiled plans for compartments with frosted glass where travellers can take private video calls or ‘cuddle’. Domestic flights will no longer be used to transport letters by Germany’s national postal carrier. The move from Deutsche Post reflects the declining significance of letter mail and allows it to improve its climate footprint. After 63 years, the last planes carrying letters between northern and southern Germany, operated by Lufthansa unit Eurowings and Tui Fly, flew overnight on 28 March on the Stuttgart-Berlin, Hannover-Munich and Hannover-Stuttgart routes. Germany’s rail strikes will finally come to an end as train drivers’ union GDL has struck a pay deal with Deutsche Bahn. Train travellers have already been hit hard by industrial action this year, from a week-long walkout in January to a series of warning strikes in March. Alongside demanding a pay increase, train drivers have been calling for a reduction in working hours from 38 to 35 per week, without a pay cut. Millions of travellers across Germany have been hit by strikes again on Thursday after two unions called for two-day walkouts over wages and work conditions. Around 80% of all long-distance trains as well as regional and commuter trains in the country were cancelled as train drivers went on strike. Air travel was affected as well, with ground staff for German airline Lufthansa stopping work early in the morning.
