The Russian disinformation network Pravda is expanding its hold in the European Union despite attempts to stop it. That’s according to a new report from the European Digital Media Observatory, an independent fact-checking organisation. France’s Viginum Agency operated by their national defence and security department (SGDSN) first detected Pravda’s activities in February as part of a wide-ranging Russian disinformation campaign in the EU. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained two people in Kyiv suspected of creating fake accounts of Ukrainian security services as part of a Russian disinformation campaign, the SBU's press service said on April 30. Russia is notorious for using disinformation and propaganda to undermine its rivals, and these efforts have only escalated since the outbreak of the full-scale war against Ukraine. The two suspects were allegedly spreading false claims about the Russian full-scale war against Ukraine in order to discredit the Ukrainian defense and security forces. Researchers have developed a computer game to help students better spot fake news, according to a study. Their experiment involved 516 Swedish upper secondary school students from four different institutions. The game, called Bad News, was created through a collaboration between researchers from the University of Cambridge and video game studios. In Bad News, the user plays “the role of fake news-monger” to get people accustomed to manipulation techniques used to mislead an audience. The game breaks down six practices commonly levered in misinformation: impersonation, emotion, polarisation, co...

This June, some 365 million people will be eligible to vote in the EU Elections, including many young voters for whom social media is a vital resource for campaigning. Four countries – Belgium, Germany, Malta and Austria – will allow 16-year-olds to vote, in Greece the minimum age to vote is 17. Five years ago, when the last EU vote was held, the regulatory landscape for online platforms was quite different: there were fewer rules on combating misinformation, and the AI Act did not yet exist. We take a look at how platform regulation in the EU has changed in 2024, compared to the last election...

Editor’s note: This article incorrectly identified Jared Moskowitz as a Republican. He is, in fact, a Democrat. A U.S. lawmaker has mocked Marjorie Taylor Greene by adding an amendment to the Ukraine aid bill requiring that she be appointed "Vladimir Putin’s Special Envoy to the United States Congress." After months of delays and several versions of the aid bill derailed by political infighting, Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled his plan earlier this week to vote on the package as four separate bills on April 20. As is customary in U.S. politics, representatives such as Greene can propose amendmen...

Washington (AFP) - Startled by nighttime pounding on his door, American political strategist Rick Wilson walked out in his underwear to find policemen with guns drawn. They were responding to yet another hoax, increasingly seen as a tool of intimidation in a crucial election year. In recent months, election workers, judges, and politicians -- on both sides of the aisle -- have been "swatted," a potentially deadly prank when a caller triggers a large law enforcement response after reporting a false violent crime. The shenanigans have stoked concern in the build up to the widely anticipated Nove...
