Meta’s Facebook and Instagram last week (30 April) became subject to an investigation under the EU’s online platform rules for seemingly lacking the robustness to counter Russian disinformation, the latest in a series of probes into platforms’ handling of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Baltic and Nordic NGOs and researchers have painted a bleak picture of big tech's efforts to stop pro-Kremlin trolls, and doubt if these probes will put a halt to ongoing disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining NATO and the EU, while trying to bolster Russia’s credibility. Faktabaari, a Finnish fact-check...

The Russian disinformation network Pravda is expanding its hold in the European Union despite attempts to stop it. That’s according to a new report from the European Digital Media Observatory, an independent fact-checking organisation. Researchers have developed a computer game to help students better spot fake news, according to a study. Their experiment involved 516 Swedish upper secondary school students from four different institutions. The game, called Bad News, was created through a collaboration between researchers from the University of Cambridge and video game studios. In Bad News, the user plays “the role of fake news-monger” to get people accustomed to manipulation techniques used to mislead an audience. The game breaks down six practices commonly levered in misinformation: impersonation, emotion, polarisation, co...

This June, some 365 million people will be eligible to vote in the EU Elections, including many young voters for whom social media is a vital resource for campaigning. Four countries – Belgium, Germany, Malta and Austria – will allow 16-year-olds to vote, in Greece the minimum age to vote is 17. Five years ago, when the last EU vote was held, the regulatory landscape for online platforms was quite different: there were fewer rules on combating misinformation, and the AI Act did not yet exist. We take a look at how platform regulation in the EU has changed in 2024, compared to the last election...

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo told reporters on Friday that Belgium's intelligence services had confirmed the "existence of a pro-Russian interference network with activities in several European countries" which is "subject to prosecution" in the country. A recent investigation led by Czech authorities revealed lawmakers sitting in the European Parliament in Brussels had received cash from a Moscow-backed influence operation to "promote" its propaganda in the bloc. "The cash payments did not take place in Belgium, but the interference does," De Croo said. "As Belgium is the seat of the EU i...

Is the EU fully prepared in the event of Donald Trump returning to the White House? In the last few weeks of his campaign, Republican candidate for president Donald Trump has given the world a glimpse of his potential approach to Europe, and the war in Ukraine - if he were to return as Commander in Chief. He's told the world that he'd 'encourage Russia to do whatever the hell they want to America's allies if those countries don't pay at least two per cent of GDP on defense. He also said he's have the Ukraine was 'settled 'in 24 hours. None of the indications based on these statements and more ...

A container ship named Dali lost propulsion and crashed into a pillar of Batimore’s Francis Scott Key bridge on March 26th – killing at least six people. Very quickly, social media users started blaming everyone and anyone for the incident – from the liberals to Israel to Ukraine. One such example that has gone viral is that Kyiv is behind the following allegations the captain of the ship is of Ukrainian nationality. "The captain of the ship that rammed down the bridge in Baltimore was a citizen of Ukraine," tweeted multiple users. "Ukrainian is taking credit for the act and saying Europe is n...

It comes after Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Thursday that “Russia had approached EU lawmakers” and paid them to “promote Russian propaganda” in Europe, as part of an operation uncovered in a Czech investigation. The Parliament’s services were unable to confirm how many MEPs could be under scrutiny, but said on Friday it was working “in coordination with its institutional partners” in response to the explosive allegations. In a letter addressed to the president of the Parliament Roberta Metsola, the chief of the centrist Renew Europe group, Valérie Hayer, describes the alleg...

The guidelines – targeted at online platforms with more than 45 million active users in the EU, and therefore designated 'Very Large Online Platforms and Search Engines' under the bloc's pioneering Digital Services Act (DSA) – set out potential measures to tackle election-related risks, harmful AI content, and misleading political advertising. They also include specific guidelines for June's crunch pan-EU election, amid fears of increased malign interference and a deluge of misinformation online. Although the guidelines are not legally binding, the Commission could launch formal proceedings ag...
