Washington (AFP) - Whether dogs truly understand the words we say -- as opposed to things like tone and context clues -- is a question that has long perplexed owners, and so far science hasn't been able to deliver clear answers. But a new brain wave study published Friday in Current Biology suggests that hearing the names of their favorite toys actually activates dogs' memories of those objects. "It definitely shows us that it's not human-unique to have this type of referential understanding," first author Lilla Magyari of the Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary, told AFP, explaining that res...

Tarrytown (United States) (AFP) - The Westminster Dog Show crowned a Pekingese named Wasabi its "Best in Show" Sunday, in the culmination of a reworked pandemic edition of the competition missing its usual pooch-loving crowds. Normally held in February, the show was delayed and moved from its home in the heart of New York City to a country estate due to Covid-19. Spectators were kept away and it was the show's first time being held outside Manhattan, but the singular passion of the event, now in its 145th year, was unchanged: dogs. Three-year-old Wasabi was crowned best in show from a pack of...

Washington (AFP) - When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Professor Gregory Gray at Duke University's Global Health Institute tasked a graduate student at his lab with developing a pan-species coronavirus test in order to help prevent the next catastrophe. The idea was to deploy the tool, once its accuracy was validated, to look back at test samples from human patients in order to search for signs of coronaviruses that might have begun to cross over from animals. Gray and his colleague's findings, released Thursday in Clinical Infectious Diseases, showed a canine coronavirus was present in a group...

New York (AFP) - French bulldogs are on track to end labrador retrievers' three-decade reign as top dog in the United States, the American Kennel Club said Tuesday. The squat, flat-faced pooches commonly called "Frenchies" jumped from fourth to second place in the club's most popular dog rankings last year. The cute canines with their bat-like ears bumped German shepherds from second -- a position they had held since 2009 -- to third spot. Frenchies also overtook golden retrievers. Labradors were America's most popular pure breds in 2020 for the 30th consecutive year, based on registrations. B...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Lady Gaga's two French bulldogs which were stolen at gunpoint in Hollywood have been safely returned, Los Angeles police said on Friday. Koji and Gustav were seized after an employee walking them was shot and wounded Wednesday night, and the attackers escaped in a vehicle. "Both of Lady Gaga's dogs have been turned in to a local police station, and they have been safely reunited with Lady Gaga representatives," Los Angeles Police Department tweeted. A woman had found the dogs and reached out to the singer's staff to return them. "The woman's identity and the location the do...

Paris (AFP) - Scientists said Wednesday they had discovered the oldest remains of a domestic dog in the Americas dating back more than 10,000 years, suggesting the animals accompanied the first waves of human settlers. Humans are thought to have migrated to North America from Siberia over what is today the Bering Strait at the end of the last Ice Age -- between 30,000 and 11,000 years ago. The history of dogs has been intertwined with man since ancient times, and studying canine DNA can provide a good timeline for human settlement. A new study led by the University at Buffalo analysed the mito...

Washington (AFP) - Pet dogs are far more likely to play with one another when their owner is present and being attentive, according to a new study, raising the intriguing possibility that they are putting on a show for our benefit. That our canine companions are keenly attuned to the level of interest humans are showing them is well established, Lindsay Mehrkam, an animal behaviorist and lead author of the paper that appeared in Animal Cognition, told AFP Tuesday. "But we weren't aware of any research that has really shown the effect of a human audience impacting species typical behavior, in t...
