There won't be another leadership challenge in Britain's Conservative Party, even if the upcoming local elections on May 2 prove disastrous, according to former British defence secretary Ben Wallace. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's governing Conservatives have been trailing behind the Labour party in polls for months, ahead of the next general election. "You know, sometimes you have to get on with it. Right? You have to set your case, set out your best case, say to the public, this is us. This is me, and get on with that," Wallace said. "There are some serial agitators," he added, saying he used ...

Nowadays, almost anybody can create audio or video recordings of celebrities or regular people acting and talking in ways they never would have by using simple, widely accessible artificial intelligence (AI) software. Image by Arzu Geybullayeva There have been many “gates” in the history of global news, but not yet a “lobster gate.” At least, not until the members of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) landed in a lobster-related scandal this week. Amid the deepening cost of living crisis in Turkey, ruling party MP Şebnem Bursalı found herself at the heart of public criticism when she posted a photo of a lobster dish during her trip to Monaco. Another party member, Salih Kahraman, also shared a photo of himself on social media celebrating his birthday with a lobster dish at the center of the...

Presidential elections are being held on Wednesday in North Macedonia, a small Balkan country that has orbited the European Union for nearly two decades with little to show for its efforts to join the 27-nation bloc. A second round of voting is almost certain to follow on May 8 - coinciding with parliamentary elections - as no candidate is expected to exceed the 50% threshold required for outright victory. Seven candidates are running for the largely ceremonial position, with the brief campaigning period focusing on EU accession, the rule of law, fighting corruption and reducing poverty. The l...

An edited version is republished in Global Voices under a media partnership. The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, does not like to compete. When he sees an electoral threat, he imposes sanctions or new rules on its adversaries. He doesn't let go of the ball of power. It even seems like he would rather puncture it than risk losing the match. Faced with this scenario, there is an opposition that has historically struggled uniting and standing up ...

Voters have begun heading to the polls in the Basque Country. Both the EH Bildu party - descending from the political wing of the terrorist group ETA - and the PNV are predicted to need backing from the Basque Socialist Party (PSE) to garner enough votes to rule in the 75-seat regional Parliament. Around 1.8 million voters are being called to the polls to decide the result. WATCH more in the player above
