Washington (AFP) - US authorities announced the arrests Monday of the co-founder of the notorious Atomwaffen neo-Nazi group and a woman he met online in the latest extremist plot to attack public electricity facilities. The FBI said Brandon Russell, who helped found Atomwaffen in 2015, was arrested in Florida, after spending four years in prison for possessing bomb-making materials. The woman, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, was arrested in Maryland where she had also spent time in prison for armed robbery. Guided by Russell, Clendaniel had planned to acquire a gun and to attack five electrical substat...

Washington (AFP) - Two men have been arrested in the Christmas day attacks that damaged four electricity substations in Tacoma, Washington that sparked fears of an extremist campaign, the Justice Department announced. They were arrested with two unregistered short-barreled firearms, one with a homemade silencer, authorities said. They were charged with conspiracy to damage energy facilities and possession of un...

Washington (AFP) - Vandalism at four power substations in the western US state of Washington over the weekend added to concerns of a possible nationwide campaign by right-wing extremists to stir fears and spark civil conflict. Local police on Tuesday gave no information on who they suspected was behind the vandalism, which knocked out power on Christmas Day for some 14,000 in Tacoma, a port city area south of Seattle. Tacoma Public Utilities, which owned two of the facilities targeted on Sunday, said in a statement that it was alerted by federal law enforcement in early December about threats ...

Washington (AFP) - Most people in Puerto Rico woke up Thursday with no electricity after a blackout hit the entire US island territory in the Caribbean. The Luma electric company said the outage Wednesday evening may have been caused by a failed circuit breaker at a power plant. It said the precise cause was not yet known. The specialized website poweroutage.us said that as of 0320 GMT Thursday, all 3.2 million residents of the island were without electricity. "Given the massive size and scope of the outage, power restoration could extend well into Thursday and Friday for some areas," Luna sai...

New York (AFP) - US electric car manufacturer Tesla shipped a record number of more than one million cars over the past year, according to figures published Saturday. The company delivered 1.06 million cars from April 2021 to March 2022, including more than 310,000 cars in the first quarter of this year alone, which is 67 percent higher than over the same period last year. Still, the figure fell short of analysts' expectations of 317,000 cars, according to data compiled by FactSet. Deliveries are considered similar to sales figures published by other manufacturers. Growth, however, slowed sha...

Los Angeles (AFP) - California's largest energy utility firm will bury 10,000 miles of power lines in a massive bid to prevent its equipment igniting more deadly wildfires, its CEO said Wednesday. Pacific Gas and Electric's faulty power lines sparked the deadliest blaze in the state's modern history, which swept through the northern Californian town of Paradise in 2018, killing 86 people. PG&E equipment was again blamed this week for one of the largest fires now blazing in California -- the Dixie Fire -- after a tree fell on a power conductor on the day the blaze began. Announcing the measure,...

Miami (AFP) - A fire at an electrical substation left hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans in the dark on Thursday, shortly after the power company reported a cyberattack that it did not immediately link to the blaze. Luma Energy confirmed the fire at a facility in the capital San Juan two hours after saying it had been targeted by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that stopped customers from accessing their accounts. "The fire caused significant blackouts across the island," the company said on Facebook. Luma Energy is a new utility on the Caribbean island, starting operations ...

Houston (AFP) - The polar vortex storm that plunged Texas into chaos continues to reverberate through the state's power grid operator, which fired its CEO on the same day Congress launched an investigation into its failures. The staggering cost of last month's storm, which killed dozens, left millions without electricity and water, and caused billions of dollars in damage has prompted ratings agencies to downgrade the debt of Texas's electric utilities, at least one of which has already filed for bankruptcy. The board of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has become a prime targ...

Houston (AFP) - Texas' power grid operator has fired its president and CEO following last month's winter storm that left millions without electricity, media reports said. Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has under come fire from customers and politicians over its apparent failure to prepare for the cold weather and the enormous bills some customers have faced due to a massive spike in energy prices. President and CEO Bill Magness was fired late Wednesday after the ERCOT board held an emergency meeting and gave him 60 days' termination notice, CNN and other media reports said, citi...

Houston (AFP) - The largest electricity co-operative in Texas has filed for bankruptcy protection after it received a $2.1 billion bill from the state's grid operator following last month's winter storm that left millions without power. Bitterly cold weather in mid-February left millions without electricity across Texas as the Arctic conditions overwhelmed local utility companies ill-prepared for such weather. Brazos Electric Power Cooperative, which supplies 16 co-op members serving more than 1.5 million Texans, said it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday after receiving "excessively hi...
