Washington (AFP) - US hiring rose much more than expected last month, according to government data published Friday, increasing the chances that the Federal Reserve will remain on pause for longer as it weighs when to start cutting interest rates. The world's largest economy added 303,000 jobs in March, up from a revised 270,000 new jobs created a month earlier, the Department of Labor announced. The surge, coming seven months before the November election pitting President Joe Biden against former Republican president Donald Trump, was far above market expectations of an increase of 200,000, ...

Washington (AFP) - US private sector hiring came in well above expectations last month, payroll firm ADP said Wednesday, with construction, financial services and manufacturing all contributing to the increase. Private sector employment rose by 184,000 in March, ADP said in a statement. This was sharply above market predictions of 150,000 new jobs, according to Briefing.com. ADP also revised up the February jobs data, from 140,000 to 155,000. The hot jobs data will be well-received by the Biden administration as it seeks to talk up the president's economic record ahead of November's preside...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Fast food workers in California on Monday hailed a pay raise that takes their minimum wage to $20 an hour, even as firms warned of likely price increases in an already expensive state. Staff flipping burgers or filling burritos at large chain restaurants will now be guaranteed one of the highest base rates in the country. "It'll help me breathe a little easier in terms of paying my rent and even buying groceries," said Angelica Hernandez, who works at a McDonald's in Los Angeles. "In all of my 19 years working in this industry... maybe 25 cents would be the max (raise) that...

The company's newest branch, Cafe Joyeux Lexington, has picked a cheery corner in the bustling Midtown business district for the company's American debut. Washington (AFP) - Hiring in the United States was robust in February although unemployment crept up, government data showed Friday, a potentially encouraging sign for policymakers hoping to cool the economy without tipping it into a downturn. Officials have been walking a fine line trying to bring down inflation by raising interest rates without causing a major blow to the economy. While analysts believed the United States could enter a recession last year, the economy has defied expectations and a surprisingly resilient labor market has helped to support growth. "The great American comeback ...

Washington (AFP) - Job gains in the US private sector picked up in February, payroll firm ADP said Wednesday, a sign that could give the Federal Reserve some pause as it mulls the timing of interest rate cuts. Private sector employment grew by 140,000 jobs last month, less than analysts expected although up from a revised 111,000 figure in January. "The labor market is dynamic, but doesn't tip the scales in terms of a Fed rate decision this year," said ADP chief economist Nela Richardson in a statement. She added that job gains remained "solid" and while salary increases were cooling, they are...

Washington (AFP) - The US labor market smashed expectations last month in a surprise hiring pick-up, government data showed Friday, with a resilient jobs market likely good news for President Joe Biden in election year. The world's biggest economy added 353,000 jobs in January, after December's figure was significantly revised upwards to 333,000, said the Department of Labor. The unemployment rate held steady at 3.7 percent for a third straight month -- hovering under 4.0 percent for two years now -- even though analysts cautioned the report also contained signs of weakness. "It's great news f...

Washington (AFP) - Private sector hiring in the United States slowed more than anticipated this month, according to data Wednesday from payroll firm ADP, following efforts to cool the world's biggest economy and tame inflation. In January, the United States added 107,000 jobs in the private sector, ADP said, down from a revised 158,000 in December. Most employment gains were in service-providing sectors including leisure and hospitality, as well as trade, transport and utilities. But other service industries such as information lost positions. "Progress on inflation has brightened the economic...

Washington (AFP) - US job growth surged unexpectedly in December, government data showed Friday, wrapping up a solid year for the labor market even as voters remain gloomy about the economy ahead of November's presidential election. The world's biggest economy added 216,000 jobs in the final month of 2023, said the Department of Labor, despite expectations of a slowdown from the prior month. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7 percent, holding at a historically low level and defying forecasts of an uptick. These robust figures come as higher interest rates bite, after the Federal Reserv...

Washington (AFP) - The United States saw its jobless rate dip in November while hiring rose more than expected, government data showed Friday, fueling optimism that the world's biggest economy may achieve the elusive goal of avoiding recession, while also taming inflation. The economy added 199,000 jobs, said the Department of Labor, and unemployment fell to 3.7 percent. Wage growth accelerated to 0.4 percent from the prior month but held steady from year-ago levels. Although employment appears to be heating up, analysts noted the underlying state of the labor market has been weakening. The fi...
