Washington (AFP) - Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and nearly two dozen Democrats called on the Justice Department Thursday to investigate the oil and gas industry over allegations of price-fixing. The senators pointed to an investigation by US antitrust authorities into a high-profile merger that concluded there was evidence of anticompetitive practice by oil executives to boost fuel costs for Americans. "These reports are alarming and lend credence to the fear that corporate avarice is keeping prices artificially high," Democrats wrote in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Sc...

Energy ministers meeting in Brussels voted unanimously today (May 30) for the EU to officially withdraw the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) while leaving open the possibility for member states to remain in their own capacity. Deciding on the bloc's future in the ECT was one of the commitments of the EU Belgian Presidency, the country’s energy minister Tinne Van Der Straeten told reporters today shortly before joining her counterparts at the Energy Council. Today’s decision followed a European Parliament vote last month signalling an overwhelming intention to quit the treaty. The ECT is a post-Cold...

By Hans Nicholas Jong JAKARTA — Calls are mounting for global financiers to cut ties with Adaro, one of Indonesia’s biggest coal companies, as the miner shows no sign of moving away from the fossil fuel despite its net-zero pledge. More than 33,000 people have signed an online petition calling on JPMorgan, Citi and Deutsche Bank to drop Adaro as a client. Citi has loaned $400 million to Adaro, while JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies don’t rule out financing the company. Adaro is a major emitter, responsible for 0.28% of global CO2 output since the...
