Brussels and French police carried out a series of simultaneous raids at European Parliament offices in Brussels and Strasbourg as well as at the home of a parliamentary staffer in the Belgian neighbourhood of Schaerbeek on Wednesday morning. The searches are part of a sprawling probe into a Russian influence operation suspected to have paid sitting Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to spread pro-Kremlin propaganda from the heart of EU institutions in Brussels. The Belgian Prosecutor, which ordered Wednesday's searches, said there were "indications" that the parliament staffer in quest...

The European Parliament is the most equal parliament in the bloc, with around 40% women MEPs in 2024, compared to almost 16% in 1979. Still, EU lawmakers can't claim parental leave, can't vote remotely, and can't appoint a temporary replacement. “If we want a gender-balanced system where fathers, not just mothers, can combine childcare and political activity, we need to recognise the right to a family life,” Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle, candidate for the EU elections in The Netherlands for D66 (Renew Europe), told Euronews. Current electoral laws and the European Parliament’s internal ...

With its innovative start-ups and world-first regulation, Europe’s technology sector should not be ignored in the European Parliament elections next month, insiders say. But the industry fears being made a scapegoat, seeing a populist parliament serving national interests, and a brain drain on the continent. Euronews Next spoke to tech groups and start-ups to find out their hopes and worries for the next parliament. ‘Populist rather than realistic’“We really hope technology won't be used as a scapegoat as much as it has been by the EU institutions in recent years, when the tech sector was blam...

Panelists debate the ethical questions raised by MEPs who have side jobs. Those extra roles are legal, but the political earthquake caused by the Qatarargate scandal led to tighter rules and more transparency. Is this enough to bridge the gulf between citizens and politicians, in today's fractured political landscape? “We see that they have im...

Walter Baier, the lead candidate for The Left, has called on Ursula von der Leyen - the outgoing Commission president who's tipped to secure a second term - to bear in mind the "huge responsibility" she carries in her overtures to hard-right parties. Speaking in an interview with Euronews on Thursday, Baier censured von der Leyen for what he described as a fear-driven willingness to partner with hard-line right-wing parties following June's European elections. "Come on, this is a matter of principle. Having given up on this idea of a cordon sanitaire, that is a huge responsibility," Baier said...

The far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) party and the regionalist, separatist European Free Alliance (EFA) both say they have been intentionally shunned by the organisers of the debate, set to take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on May 23 ahead of June's European elections. In correspondence seen by Euronews, the ID Party - which harbours the likes of France's Rassemblement National, Italy's Lega and Germany's Alternative für Deutschland and which forms its own group in the European Parliament - was told by the EBU that it could not be represented at the debate because it had n...

Elections to the new European Parliament are now just weeks away, and headline polling suggests there’ll be a swing to the right. But alongside the party politics, MEPs can also have a personal spin on lawmaking, championing their own hobby horses and leading work on key pieces of legislation. With the rising cost of living and supporting economic growth ranked among EU citizens’ biggest concerns, and MEPs poised to consider major laws on capital markets and a digital euro, financial issues are going to be a key part of their five-year mandate. Here’s eight of the most prominent names who coul...
