  • Facebook derails effort to mislead protesters in Russia

San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook on Wednesday said it derailed a deceptive campaign to use hundreds of bogus Instagram accounts to mislead people in Russia protesting the arrest of Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny. The network off Instagram accounts used hashtag and location "poisoning" typically associated with spam or financial scams to drown out posts by protesters, according to Facebook global threat disruption lead David Agranovich. The tactic involves coopting hashtags being used as social media markers for hot topics, in this case protests, by unleashing torrents of posts bearing the labels....

  • Facebook restores news for Australian users after media bargaining deal

Sydney (AFP) - Facebook on Friday restored access to news for its Australian users after reaching agreement with the government on a landmark law requiring it and other tech firms to pay for journalistic content. The Facebook pages of Australian news outlets were able to update from early Friday morning for the first time in a week, since the social media slapped a ban on news content being seen Down Under in a dispute over the law which was adopted Thursday. Facebook and Google, the two companies targeted by the regulation, strongly objected to clauses requiring them to submit to mandatory ar...

  • Facebook launches PR campaign to defend targeted ads in spat with Apple

San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook is not backing down in its fight with Apple over a new privacy feature that could curb tracking needed for the social network's targeted ads, launching a major media campaign to defend a practice that is a big revenue generator. The "Good Ideas Deserve To Be Found" initiative unveiled on Thursday includes television, radio and digital spots. "Every business starts with an idea, and being able to share that idea through personalized ads is a game changer for small businesses," Facebook said in a statement, citing examples like a farm that offers goat yoga classes....

  • Violent clashes at Myanmar demonstrations as more sanctions imposed

People demonstrating against the military coup in Myanmar clashed with pro-military protesters on Thursday, while the military regime faced more sanctions from Britain and was blocked by Facebook. In the largest city, Yangon, supporters of the coup pelted pro-democracy protesters with stones, leaving several people injured, according to eyewitnesses cited by news portal Frontier Myanmar. Ma Su, a resident, told Frontier Myanmar that the pro-military group was also carrying knives and batons. People on social media speculated that the military paid the group to cause unrest and make it seem lik...

  • Facebook adds new tools to fight online child exploitation

San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook on Tuesday said it is stepping up its fight against child abuse with new tools for spotting such content and tighter rules about what crosses the line. "Using our apps to harm children is abhorrent and unacceptable," global head of safety Antigone Davis said in a blog post. "We are developing targeted solutions, including new tools and policies to reduce the sharing of this type of content." The social media giant updated its guidelines to make it clear it will remove Facebook or Instagram accounts dedicated to sharing images of children posted along with caption...

  • Facebook to restore Australia news, pay media companies

Sydney (AFP) - Facebook said Tuesday it will lift a contentious ban on Australian news and pay local media companies for content, after a last-gasp deal on pending landmark legislation. Australia's Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced a face-saving compromise that will see Google and Facebook plunge tens of millions of dollars into the struggling local news sector. In return the US digital firms will, for now, avoid being subjected to mandatory payments that could cost them vastly more and create what they see as an alarming global precedent. Just hours after the compromise was unveiled, Facebo...

  • Mogul vs Mogul: Australia's tech law pits Murdoch against Zuckerberg

Sydney (AFP) - Australia's push to regulate tech giants has become a power struggle between two of the world's most powerful men, with Rupert Murdoch and Mark Zuckerberg locked in a generational battle for media dominance. Efforts in Australia to make Google and Facebook pay for news has garnered worldwide attention, creating what some call a defining moment for the web and for journalism, and even a litmus test for democracy. But beyond the high-sounding rhetoric lies a more base struggle, with the barons of traditional media fighting back against their digital heirs. Sydney tech billionaire ...
