Portraits gifted by St. Louis-area nonprofit honor children lost to gun violence
ST. LOUIS — Artists who work with the nonprofit group Faces Not Forgotten all receive the same advice: Focus on the eyes. It was more than 10 years ago that Christine Ilewski founded the St. Louis-area organization that creates hand-painted portraits for families that have lost children to gun violence. Artists have completed more than 300 portraits of those killed across the country, including more than 60 from St. Louis, most age 20 and younger. "It's the eyes where you get the emotion," said Ilewski, a college art instructor who lives in Alton. "That's where you can connect that this was so...

Captain Comics: Sticking the landing. Or not
We are lucky to live in the era of Peak TV. But, as with every explosion of light, there are shadows. A dark side. And in the case of Peak TV, it’s the ending. The TV landscape is littered with formerly favorite shows that failed to stick the landing, and thus remain bitter in memory. “Lost.” “Dexter.” “Seinfeld.” There is no single reason, no obvious land mine to avoid. Series finales can remain unsatisfying because they’re tonally off, poorly thought out, morally suspect, badly written, implausible or just inexplicable and weird. (Looking at you, “Sopranos.”) But the biggest mistake seems to...

KFC’s new fried chicken sandwich is bigger, crunchier and much better
It was bound to happen. After several fast food chains revamped their fried chicken sandwiches over the past year in the hopes of standing out in the ongoing fried chicken sandwich wars, KFC is finally getting into the game. And as your humble fried chicken sandwich correspondent who once ranked 26 of the fast food options, I obviously had to investigate. Of course, KFC already had a few fried chicken sandwiches on its menu. But as I found a few years ago, they didn’t seem particularly well loved. It’s main offering, the crispy Colonel sandwich, was weirdly small and not particularly exciting....

Free, affordable health clinics play crucial role in coronavirus pandemic
DETROIT – When Ebony Bascomb's husband was diagnosed with colon cancer in September, she had to take a three-month leave of absence and cut back on her hours at the fast food restaurant where she is an assistant manager, to care for her husband and their five children. “It felt like I was about to lose my husband,” said Bascomb, who is 36 and lives in Dearborn Heights. He’s doing better now, she said, but Bascomb still worries about maintaining a virus-free environment for him and her family. Throughout, Bascomb said, family members have stepped up to help. So has their local health care clini...
