By Moh. Tamimi BELITUNG ISLAND, Indonesia — Nasidi paddled gently past a row of the eponymous rasau trees that line the riverbanks here in Tebet Rasau village, where a decade ago people would wade into the Lenggang River to catch silverfish. But life along the river here in the hills of Belitung Island, he said, is not as it once was. “In the past, if it rained upstream, after three days the water would get to our village,” Nasidi told Mongabay Indonesia as he continued along the Lenggang. “Now, as soon as it rains, the water rushes down quickly and causes flooding.” Tebet Rasau is named for t...

Belgium has warned fellow member states that failure to agree this week to reform “technically obsolete” EU rules setting minimum tax rates for fuels and electricity could delay incentives for a switch away from harmful fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives. In a bid to secure the necessary unanimous support for reforms to EU rules on energy taxation, the current holder of the rotating EU Council presidency has suggested governments should have a largely free hand over whether to tax aviation and shipping fuel, and proposed the agriculture and fishing industries should enjoy tax-free energy. “T...

An argument has been brewing for weeks between France and the UK over new post-Brexit fishing rules. Last month, the UK banned bottom trawling in part of its protected waters. The move is aimed at protecting vulnerable marine habitats as this fishing practice uses heavy nets dragged along the bottom that damage the seafloor. But French fishermen say it threatens their livelihoods and some who depend heavily on these waters claim they are being unfairly targeted. What is the basis of the bottom trawling dispute? The British government announced that the harmful practice was prohibited in certain...

Bottom trawling is rife in marine protected areas across the UK and EU. Allowing this is endangering our ocean, our climate and our coastal communities. The damage caused by trawling and dredging in marine protected areas (MPAs) should not be underestimated. Weighted nets scour and scar the seabed, destroying habitat — especially the refuges of young wildlife — and uprooting the foundations of ocean ecosystems. This industrial extraction is also indiscriminate, and levels of untargeted bycatch are among the highest of any form of fishing. Over 400 million tonnes of untargeted marine life have ...

Greece will ban bottom trawling in all of its marine protected areas (MPAs) by 2030, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today. Speaking at the Our Ocean Conference in Athens, he said the country would become the first to bring an end to the damaging fishing practice in these protected areas. It will be banned in Greece’s three national marine parks - one of which is the largest in the East Mediterranean Sea - by 2026 with the rest following before the end of the decade. Bottom trawling involves dragging heavy fishing nets across the ocean floor, which can destroy habitats and e...

By Austin Landis NUEVA VENECIA, Colombia — Sandra Milena Manjarez puts two plates of bright yellow rice topped with liza — a finger-sized mullet fish similar to a sardine — on the white plastic table on her porch. In Nueva Venecia, where homes sit on stilts in the middle of an expansive lagoon in the northern department of Magdalena, everyone subsists on fish, mainly mullet, catfish, tilapia and tarpon. “There’s no other work here,” Manjarez told Mongabay. “What we’ve always lived on is fishing.” The Ciénaga Grande of Santa Marta, or the “great swamp,” is a 428,000-hectare (1.06 million- acre)...

Biologists have been keeping tabs on a remote Lake Superior island's fragile wolf population every winter since 1958. But they had to cut this season's planned seven-week survey short after just a fortnight. The ski plane the Michigan Tech University researchers study the wolves from uses the frozen lake as a landing strip because there's nowhere to touch down on the island. But this weirdly warm winter left the Great Lakes nearly devoid of ice. As climate change accelerates, scientists are scrambling to understand how iceless winters could affect the world's largest freshwater system. Most of...

Boynton Beach (United States) (AFP) - The goliath grouper, a colossus of a fish that can weigh up to 360 kilograms (nearly 800 pounds), is the delight of divers in Florida, though scientists warn their numbers are down since the US state allowed fishing of the giants to resume. "There's nowhere else you can have an experience with a fish that big while you're diving -- and being this close to it," Dr. James Locascio, a marine biologist with the Mote Marine Laboratory, told AFP. "And so, really, we feel that the fish is worth a lot more alive than it is dead." During a sea trip early this mont...

Washington (AFP) - The scales of justice have caught two anglers found cheating during a fishing tournament in the midwestern US state of Ohio. Jacob Runyan, 43, and Chase Cominsky, 36, were sentenced to 10 days in jail on Thursday for hiding lead weights inside their catch. Runyan and Cominsky were also fined $2,500 and ordered to forfeit the $130,000 boat they used during the Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament in September 2022. Professional fishing tournaments are popular in the United States with tens of thousands of dollars often at stake. Cash prizes for the Lake Erie tournament were awa...

Panama City (AFP) - A global conference to save the world's oceans kicked off Thursday in Panama with urgent calls to adopt an international protection treaty, along with billions of dollars in US and EU pledges for research, monitoring and conservation. Political and business leaders, environmental activists and academics at the two-day conference are grappling with how best to address a multitude of threats facing the oceans -- from climate change and pollution to overfishing and mining. The Our Ocean Conference is "so incredibly important because it is a conference that is focused on action...
