Heavy rains have caused catastrophic flooding in southern Brazil killing at least 100 people and leaving thousands more homeless. The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul was hit by heavy rain last week and subsequent flooding has washed away roads, collapsed bridges and caused landslides across the state. The latest estimates from the state civil defence authority say that 372 people have been injured and as many as 128 are still unaccounted for. More than 1.45 million people across 417 of the state’s 497 cities have been affected and the latest estimates suggest more than 200,000 people have ...

Officials have said London’s flood defence walls will need to be half a metre higher in the future to protect against climate change. The announcement came as they marked the 40th anniversary of the Thames Barrier, which defends the capital against flooding. Though initially intended to protect London until 2030, the moveable barrier and the city’s wider flood defences will function until 2070, the UK’s Environment Agency expects. But sea levels are projected to rise by around a metre by 2100 and storms are becoming increasingly intense due to climate change. This, officials have said, means g...

Massive floods in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state killed at least 60 people and another 101 were reported missing, according to Sunday's toll from local authorities. The state governor said he believed the death toll would only grow as emergency workers were finally able to reach places that were previously inaccessible. In the town of Feliz, 80 kilometres from the state capital, Porto Alegre, a significantly swollen river swept away a bridge that connected it with the neighbouring city of Linha Nova. The floods left a wake of devastation, including landslides, washed-out roads and c...

Pakistan has recorded its wettest April since 1961, with more than double the usual rainfall for the month, the country’s national weather centre has announced. The Asian nation experienced days of extreme weather in April that killed scores of people as well as destroying property and farmland. Experts said Pakistan witnessed heavier rains because of climate change. Last month’s rainfall for Pakistan was a 164 per cent increase from the usual level for April, Pakistan’s national weather centre says. The intense downpours affected the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southwest...

The Isles of Scilly are 140 islands, 28 miles off the Cornish coast. Five islands are inhabited with a population of just over 2,000 people, the southernmost settled one being St. Agnes. Due to their position at the end of the North Atlantic Drift, they are bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and can often feel sub-tropical. They don't generally experience the hot and cold temperature swings of the rest of the UK. Instead, with their exquisite blue seas, green landscapes and sparkling white beaches, the Isles of Scilly feel more Mediterranean, although perhaps not as warm as Cornwall....

Europe’s cities are facing the impacts of climate change ever more regularly and severely. After 2023’s record summer heat, flooding and heatwaves, the need to invest in resilience has never been clearer. A new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) has taken stock of adaption across Europe’s urban centres, looking at what actions cities are taking and what is already working. It finds that almost all European cities are using nature-based solutions as their tool of choice to improve resilience. Of the 19,000 climate action plans surveyed, 91 per cent included options like maintaini...
