It was a big day in Iowa athletics. The replacement for Ed Podolak was named it’s our good friend Pat Angerer. He will replace Podolak in the radio booth this fall and be paired with Gary Dolphin on Saturday afternoons to call the Hawkeye football games. We talk to Angerer about his process in getting involved and interested in this job. What was the interview process like for him and he talks about his recent simulated game with Dolphin prior to being offered the job. What does this job mean to him? Will he be nervous once he officially gets started calling games on Saturday’s? Then we move o...

When Kate Martin was selected by the Las Vegas Aces with the 18th pick in the draft back in April, she was just grateful to get an opportunity with the back-to-back league champs. Fast forward to Monday night and she heard her name called by the public address announcer at Crypto.com Arena as starter for the Aces. With Jackie Young out of the lineup due to an illness, the former Hawkeye was able to make her first career start. If you want an idea of how well liked Kate is across the country, it was a road game, 1,900 miles from her home town and in a state she had never visited. Still, Kate re...

When it was announced in late April that Ed Podolak would be transition from his long time role as the color analyst for Iowa football, there was immediate speculation as to which former Hawkeye would take his place in the broadcast booth. That question was answered on Monday when the University of Iowa and Learfield announced that former Hawkeye linebacker Pat Angerer would become the radio partner of Gary Dolphin starting this fall. “I would like to thank Learfield and the University of Iowa for this amazing opportunity,” said Angerer. “Since the beginning of this process, they have been not...

The Iowa Hawkeyes extended a new scholarship offer today to Class of 2027 standout Jaxx DeJean. The younger brother of Iowa consensus All-American Cooper DeJean, who is now with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jaxx is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver/tight end that just finished his freshman year of high school at OABCIG. As a freshman, DeJean showed great playmaking ability, finishing the season with 37 catches for 500 yards and seven touchdowns receiving as well as 20 carries for 128 yards and five touchdowns rushing. Defensively, he had 28 tackles and four interceptions. Overall, Iowa is the se...

The Iowa Women’s Basketball team delivered some tough news on Friday morning, announcing that former top 100 recruit Ava Jones will take a medical disqualification and retire from college basketball. Jones will remain on scholarship and continue to work toward her degree at the University of Iowa. “We wish Ava the best on the road to recovery and fully support the decision she made to step away from the game,” Head Coach Jan Jensen said. “She worked tirelessly to get to this point, but she made the best decision for herself and her well-being.” Statement from Ava Jones I would like to start by...

This past Monday evening has the potential to be one of the more momentous occasions for Iowa Hawkeye athletics in recent memory. Now look, I realize in the era of Caitlin Clark, Cooper DeJean, Spencer Lee, Luka Garza, etc. that statement seems like a pretty bold one to make. But based upon several factors that’ll I’ll detail in this piece; it isn’t quite as far-fetched as it may seem on the surface. I’m talking of course about the announcement from Ben Kueter that he’d be dedicating the next 10 months solely to the sport of wrestling. By now, most of you probably know the Cliffs Notes version...

The last thing the world needs right now is another middle-aged, white man from Iowa weighing in on Caitlin Clark’s bumpy rookie reception in the WNBA. But guess what? You’re getting one! In my defense, I’ve written about Iowa athletes for two decades on Hawkeye Report, so I have more bona fides than many of my pasty Midwestern bros, er, brethren. My typing fingers may be as Cheeto-stained as any other angry internet commenter, but I at least have some perspective. The Clark phenomenon has sparked much racial animus, misogyny, apologies, non-apologies and vitriol across what feels like every c...

In the grand scheme of things, a player making his MLB debut isn’t an uncommon occurrence. Every single year, a couple hundred players get the call up to the majors and appear in their first ever MLB game. Just because it’s a common occurrence doesn’t mean it’s not a life changing day for every single one of them. On Tuesday night at Angel Stadium, former Iowa starting pitcher and Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Adam Mazur stepped on to the mound for the San Diego Padres. Fans of the Woodbury High Royals, South Dakota State Jackrabbits and Iowa Hawkeyes, all watched eagerly. Meanwhile, in attendan...

Cue transfer portal season. Just 48 hours after the portal officially opened for business and over a thousand names have already entered. There’s a wide variety of opinions on whether or not having that many players looking for new homes is healthy for the sport or not. One thing is for certain, any team looking to fill a couple of roster spots will have plenty of options. Rick Heller and the Iowa Hawkeyes could be one of the teams looking to make a couple of additions this offseason. A source indicates that the coaching staff is looking to potentially add a pitcher or two, while they are also...

A long three days of wrestling out in Geneva, Ohio proved to be quite a fruitful one for the future of the Iowa Hawkeyes – as 14 current/incoming athletes competed at the Under-20 World Team Trials and Under-23 Nationals events. By lunch time Sunday, a total of eight Iowa entries had earned podium (top eight) finishes, including three of whom secured individual titles and a subsequent berth on Team USA for varying World Championships to be held later this year. That trio – comprised of current Hawkeyes Ben Kueter (U20 Freestyle) and Patrick Kennedy (U23 Freestyle), as well as incoming freshman...
