Just like that, all will be quiet at Duane Banks Field next week. The Iowa Baseball team entered the season ranked in the top 25 by multiple media outlets and had aspirations of not only winning the Big Ten, but potentially hosting an NCAA Tournament Regional. The 54 game season raced by and last Thursday, the Hawkeyes watched their season come to a close with a loss to Illinois at the Big Ten Tournament. A mix of inconsistency on the mound, injuries and bad luck led the demise of the Hawkeyes season. Instead of discussing the upcoming NCAA Tournament, Iowa is looking to turn the page to next ...

After a season that fell well short of expectations on the pitching mound, the Iowa Baseball coaching staff will have a big change going into the 2025 season. Prior to arriving at Iowa, McGrath made coaching stops at Iona College, UMass Lowell and Elon, while he also spent three seasons as a pitching coach in the Seattle Mariners organization. It was an up and down season for the Iowa Baseball team. They entered the year with the highest of expectations, with hopes of winning the Big Ten and potentially hosting an NCAA Tournament regional. According to Rick Heller, every so often you get a season where it seems like every break goes against you. Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, the 2024 season was one of those seasons. Fighting for their life in the losers bracket portion of the Big Ten Tournament, the Hawkeyes were hoping to overcome the bad breaks to keep their season alive for another day. After a two-run single from Coltin Quagli...

The year for Rick Heller and Co. has been one that has gone far different than many predicted. One that has failed to meet the lofty expectations placed on them by themselves and the media. Despite that, they arrived in Omaha this week hoping to put the entire regular season behind them and create some magic on the diamond where dreams come true every year. Unfortunately, their shot at a magical run got off to the wrong start. Coming into the game, Jack Young had given up just nine walks in 31.0 innings of work. In the bottom of the tenth, he issued three straight walks and Stephen Hrustich wa...

Well, well, well – how about that afternoon/evening that we just witnessed for Iowa Hawkeye wrestling? One minute you’re going about your usual routine with an eye toward the Memorial Day weekend, and the next you’re being bombarded with news that encompassed pretty much the entire emotional spectrum. Over the span of roughly seven hours on Tuesday the Iowa men’s program dealt with ALL of the following: The disappointment of a potential transfer that could’ve been (but never actually was), the return of an All-American who’d previously been left adrift by NCAA suspension, a pivotal portal addi...

It is postseason time for the Iowa Baseball team. The Hawkeyes will head off to Omaha for the Big Ten Tournament this week, which has been yearly occurence under head coach Rick Heller. Prior to his arrival, Iowa had qualified for the tournament just once in six seasons, but they are eight for eight under Heller, including winning the tournament title in 2017. This season, the Hawkeyes will be looking for some of that 2017 magic, as they need to win the whole thing Omaha to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa finished the regular season with a 31-21 overall record and finished in a tie fo...

Although the Hawkeyes final regular season series against Florida International had nearly no meaning on paper, it was imperative that they put together a good weekend prior to the Big Ten Tournament. The results of the series were not going to change the fact that they have to win the whole thing in Omaha to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. That being said, it’s much easier to arrive in Omaha with a hopeful attitude after a successful weekend and that’s exactly what Rick Heller’s Hawkeyes will do. After an impressive offensive night on Friday, Iowa kept the bats going on Saturday afternoon...

For a moment, it looked like Iowa was going to pull off a ninth inning rally to walk it off in front of the fans at Principal Park. Bases loaded, two outs, winning run on second base, with Raider Tello at the plate. The crowd of over 4,000 fans came to their feet, urging Tello to come up with a clutch hit. Instead, FIU reliever Ryan Carbacas came up with a strikeout to end the game. It just wasn’t the Hawkeyes night, a sentiment that has been shared far too often this season. “Really tough loss. Really tough to stomach one like that,” said head coach Rick Heller. “It just wasn’t to be, so we h...
