The final few residents of Hong Kong’s only privately-owned low-rental housing estate have been moving out of their homes to make way for its redevelopment, with Friday the deadline for their eviction. Tai Hang Sai Estate was built in 1965 and 1977 to rehouse people affected by the clearance of the Tai Hang Sai Resettlement Area, and offered over 1,600 units at below market value. Although Tai Hang Sai Estate’s redevelopment was discussed in the Legislative Council as early as 2011, it was not until last June that tenants were given an eviction notice, informing them that they would need to le...

Once home to the military families, Treasure Hill Artist Village has become one of Taipei’s most unique landmarks. A hilltop assemblage of 1960s and 70s shanties, many of them illegally erected, the enclave is now an incubator for Taiwan and international art, hosting residencies and housing studios. It is not just for artists, though. The intricate alleyways that meander through the haphazard shacks are dotted with sculptures and street art, independent boutiques and artisanal coffee shops, too. Treasure Hill Artist Village is about 10 minutes by foot from Gongguan MRT station. It is open bet...

A rare show-white sparrow has caught the attention of Hong Kong birdwatchers and photographers in Sai Ying Pun. HKFP’s photographer, Kyle Lam, spotted the elusive white-featured bird alongside some of its more common counterparts in Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park. The bird could have a genetic condition known as leucism, whereby a lack of melanin pigment results in a partial white appearance. There is also a chance the striking plumage is a result of albinism, though few sparrows survive with the condition. Yahoo News reported that several dozen observers have been coming to the park in recent days...

At the request of HKFP, Sergei Sputnikoff has scanned hundreds of Kodachrome slides of historic Hong Kong captured by a distant American relative he knew as Uncle Bill. “He travelled all over the world in the 70s and 80s and took a bunch of slide photos… When he passed away, my father-in-law saved his slide collection from being thrown away. Then I saved it when he himself decided to throw it away,” Sputnikoff said. Uncle Bill visited the city twice, in 1971 and 1980, capturing around 300 scenes. Photos by Uncle Bill. These days, many Hongkongers speak of migration; perhaps they are planning a move, or know people who have already left. In 2023, Chief Executive Lee Ka-chiu said that the city had lost 200,000 from its workforce in recent years, a shortage he said he hoped to address by attracting foreign talent and importing labour. When Hongkongers do choose to leave their hometown, many opt for the United Kingdom or Canada. Taiwan, too, is a top choice. Compared with Western countries, Taiwan and Hong Kong share traditional Chinese characters, culture and food. These elements can make Hongkongers feel more...

Hong Kong has been celebrating the Year of the Dragon with the return of the Lunar New Year parade, after a five-year break, and a 23-minute HK$13 million fireworks display. Police say over 338,000 people witnessed Sunday’s fireworks display. “We’re all here to welcome the Year of the ‘Loong,'” Chief Executive John Lee said at Saturday’s parade in Tsim Sha Tsui. “In Chinese culture, the “loong” – people usually call it the dragon – symbolises nobility, good fortune and vitality. It’s going to be a year of auspicious opportunities, and dragon-sized blessings for us all.” Help safeguard press fr...
