After House Speaker Kevin McCarthy relied on Democrats Saturday to pass the crucial stopgap plan to fund the federal government, he is likely to face a motion to remove him from office this week. However, it remains unclear if there would be enough votes for his ouster. On Monday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), a harsh critic of McCarthy, threatened to remove the speaker sometime this week. He said he would make use of a procedural tool, called a motion to vacate. While speaking on the House floor, Gaetz called on McCarthy to reveal details of an alleged deal with the White House to introduce le...

The Senate passed legislation to repeal the Biden administration’s student loan relief plan, which would cancel up to $20,000 of debt for the tens of millions of Americans who received a federal loan to attend college. While it’s uncommon that the Democratic-majority Senate to pass legislation that undermines one of President Joe Biden’s most valued objectives, the resolution to repeal the student loan relief plan passed the Senate with a 52-46 vote. It passed the House with a 218-203 vote a week prior. Since its inception, the student loan relief plan has been criticized by Republicans for be...

Rep. George Santos (R-New York) was charged in 2017 with theft, having provided “bad checks” written in his name to dog breeders. The congressman reportedly wrote $15,125 in bad checks that were made out for “puppies.” Days later, Santos held an adoption event with his charity Friends of Pets United. Santos’ case was dismissed after he denied any wrongdoing and claimed that his checkbook was stolen from him. Earlier this month, the FBI announced that they were investigating Santos for fraud against disabled New Jersey Navy veteran Richard Osthoff, who claims that the new GOP congressman took $...

There may be smoke billowing from the U.S. Capitol building – and it’s legal. In part of their sweeping rules changes governing the house, Republicans decided to allow tobacco smoking in the Capitol. The law allows for the consumption of tobacco products in a majority of the building. The rule excludes the use of smoke on the House floor. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) has been one of the loudest proponents of the rule change. He joined Tucker Carlson on Friday to talk about complaints arising within the Democratic party on the new resolution. “I don’t know what all the hoopla is about,” he said on...

Former President Donald Trump called on the Supreme Court on Monday to hold off the release of his tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service to the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Committee. Last week a federal appeals court allowed for the tax returns to be released. Trump’s legal team requested that the release be paused while the high court determines whether or not to take on the case. As it stands now, the House committee will be able to obtain the records on Thursday. Trump’s lawyer listed two reasons for their request, “The mooting of their legal claims and the disclosure of the...

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) said she wanted “to deck” a man who harassed her, calling her his “favorite big-booty Latina,” as she walked up the steps of the Capitol on Wednesday. She commented on the incident on Twitter shortly after it happened posting a photo of the heckler’s face on Twitter to condemn him for his actions. She also called out the officer who watched the incident happen without stepping in. She later deleted the initial post saying, “I posted about a deeply disgusting incident that happened today on the Capitol steps, but took it down bc it’s clearly someone se...

Oklahoma Democratic House candidate Abby Broyles apologized for drunkenly lashing out at middle school girls at a Valentine’s Day weekend sleepover. She initially denied the incident to Oklahoma News 4, but later said it was because she didn’t remember it happening. She explained her behavior was caused by drinking wine and having a bad reaction to taking sleep medication. “Instead of helping me sleep, I hallucinated,” Broyles said in an interview with television station KFOR. “And I don’t remember anything until I woke up or came to, and I was throwing up in a hamper.” Broyles had agreed to a...

United States Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Illinois) over the weekend blasted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) for refusing to take disciplinary action against Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado), who referred to Omar as a terrorist and member of the “Jihad Squad” during a town hall on Thanksgiving Day. “What it is like “to hear that kind of blatant bigotry, blatant Islamophobia, coming from a fellow elected member of the House of Representatives?” CNN host Jake Tapper asked Omar on Sunday’s edition of State of the Union. “It’s shocking and unacceptable, and, you know, it’s very unbecomi...

Reo. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) recently won her seat to represent Georgia’s 14th congressional district, but some are already calling for her to be expelled from Congress after she was accused of inciting the Capitol riots with her comments. Adam Clayton Powell, former chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor, set a precedent for representative removal when House Speaker John W. McCormack investigated him for offenses of financial misconduct. Following the investigation, the House voted 307 to 116 not to seat Powell and declared his seat vacant. This led to the 1969 case Po...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the first woman with this title, won a fourth non-consecutive term on Sunday, after the Democratic party lost seats, but kept control of the lower chamber. After serving for 17 years in charge of the House Democrats, Pelosi ran unopposed in her election. Many observers believe this will be her last term as Speaker. She led the House from 2006 to 2011 and after Democrats took back the House in 2018. “It gives (me) great pride to serve as speaker of the most diverse House of Representatives in the history of our country,” said Pelosi. To win the speakership, Pelosi ha...
