Tourism is pricing locals out of being able to live on Ibiza, campaigners say. Activists are taking to the streets this weekend to protest what they say are the downsides of tourism. According to Prou Ibiza (‘Enough Ibiza’ in Catalan), nurses and police officers are having to live in cars and caravans because housing is unaffordable, and operations and cancer treatment have been delayed because doctors can't afford to live on the white isle. The campaigners are calling on authorities to limit the number of tourist beds in Ibiza, one of Spain’s most popular resorts. They will protest outside th...

Housing construction in Germany again failed to gain momentum last year despite high demand, particularly in urban centres, according to the official figures released on Thursday. The number of flats that been completed fell by 0.3% compared to the previous year, the Federal Statistical Office reported, representing a total of 294,400 homes built. This was a smaller drop than feared, but was still a long way off the centre-left government's target of building 400,000 new homes per year. The number of houses completed per year has hardly changed since 2021. Housing Minister Klara Geywitz descri...

Hong Kong’s subdivided units should be a minimum of 100 square feet – or 9.3 square metres – a surveyors’ group has recommended to a government taskforce studying the city’s long-standing housing issue. In a press conference on Friday, the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) raised a number of suggestions for improving conditions in subdivided units, ranging from living space to fire safety requirements. The net area of subdivided flats should be no smaller than 100 square feet including the kitchen and bathroom, the group said. Around 20,000 to 30,000 currently live in subdivided dwelling...

Phoenix (AFP) - Wearing a bulletproof vest and with a gun strapped to his waist, Constable Lennie McCloskey opens his folder and looks through the court orders: eleven evictions to be carried out today. "It's a slow day" in Maricopa County, Arizona, he says. Maricopa is home to Phoenix, one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, a place where rents have skyrocketed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving an ever-increasing number of people in trouble. "I typically do between 19 and 25 (evictions) a day," said McCloskey, one of 26 such officers in Maricopa. Much of the Un...

An NGO serving Hong Kong’s low-income residents has urged the government to delay the enforcement of a controversial waste charging scheme among disadvantaged tenants of “cage homes,” subdivided units and those in “three-nil” buildings. “Three-nil” buildings are generally those which lack an owners’ company, residents’ organisation or property management firm to manage the building. Alongside eight residents, the Society for Community Organisation (SoCO) went to the Legislative Council (LegCO) on Tuesday to lodge a complaint and spoke of residents’ concerns about the upcoming waste charging sc...
