“This is not a lament, but a collective memory,” says British-Pakistani artist Osman Yousefzada, looking at his work at Bradford’s Cartwright Hall. His solo exhibition, Where It Began, offers a profoundly personal take on questions of migration and memory, all the while engaging with universally relevant themes of labour, community and identity. The show – which spans textiles, video and sculpture, and sees Yousefzada temporarily wrap various artworks, including a bust of Queen Victoria – is the kick-off event in the countdown to Bradford being UK City of Culture 2025. Though Where It Began is...

Hundreds of protesters marched through Dublin city centre holding signs against immigration into Ireland. They were met by a small counter protest, with police officers blocking the two groups as they exchanged chants. The march, which began just after 2.30pm, was comprised of protesters wearing Irish flags and chanting "our streets". The demonstration took 45 minutes to pass through the streets of the Irish capital, causing traffic disruption. The protest is the latest in a series of increasingly conspicuous anti-immigration demonstrations in Ireland, whose politics of migration and integrati...

British and Irish ministers are trying to ease tensions between their governments as London refuses to accept the return of asylum seekers arriving in Ireland – many of whom are apparently fleeing Britain for fear of deportation to Rwanda. The British government recently passed a highly controversial law under which asylum seekers and others arriving in the UK by illicit means, such as small boats crossing the English channel, will be deported to Rwanda to have their cases processed. Today, Irish officials are expected to discuss emergency legislation for a new policy to “return” the migrants ...

As Europe continues to confront large-scale irregular migration from Africa via dangerous routes, the Canary Islands are bearing the brunt of a particular surge. According to Frontex – the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders – there were more than 6,600 irregular crossings via the Western African migratory route in January, 10 times the figure reported one year ago. In stark contrast, Frontex said the number of irregular border crossings into the EU fell to nearly 14,000 in January, down about one-third from December, bringing the number roughl...

Finland will extend the closure of its border crossing points with Russia beyond the current 14 April deadline “until further notice”. The Finnish Interior Ministry posted on X that the decision was made over concerns undocumented migrants were entering the country from Russia. "Russia is using instrumentalised migration against Finland. Based on information provided by public authorities, the risk that instrumentalised migration will resume and expand as seen previously remains likely," said the Interior Ministry. Finland closed the 1,340-kilometer land border late last year after more than 1...

This is one of the eye-catching takeaways from an exclusive Euronews poll conducted by Ipsos among almost 26,000 respondents across 18 member states ahead of the elections to the European Parliament, which will be held between 6 and 9 June. The first-of-its-kind survey shows that 51% of Europeans have a "negative" assessment of the bloc's impact on migration policy, while only 16% have a "positive" view. Meanwhile, 32% say the impact has been "neither positive nor negative." The trend cuts through genders, age groups and occupations, and is consistent in most countries, where the negative side...

Migration is one of the most controversial political subjects but a project to collect the sounds of this phenomenon will try to re-shape the debate around this issue. Migration Sounds has called for people to send sounds which represent moving away from their country to start a new life in a foreign country. These sounds will then be given to musicians and composers to make a piece of work which be used in the project. The idea is the brainchild of Cities and Memory and COMPAS, the Centre on Migration Policy and Society of the University of Oxford, in Britain Stuart Fowkes, sound artist and c...
