This past Monday evening has the potential to be one of the more momentous occasions for Iowa Hawkeye athletics in recent memory. Now look, I realize in the era of Caitlin Clark, Cooper DeJean, Spencer Lee, Luka Garza, etc. that statement seems like a pretty bold one to make. But based upon several factors that’ll I’ll detail in this piece; it isn’t quite as far-fetched as it may seem on the surface. I’m talking of course about the announcement from Ben Kueter that he’d be dedicating the next 10 months solely to the sport of wrestling. By now, most of you probably know the Cliffs Notes version...

A long three days of wrestling out in Geneva, Ohio proved to be quite a fruitful one for the future of the Iowa Hawkeyes – as 14 current/incoming athletes competed at the Under-20 World Team Trials and Under-23 Nationals events. By lunch time Sunday, a total of eight Iowa entries had earned podium (top eight) finishes, including three of whom secured individual titles and a subsequent berth on Team USA for varying World Championships to be held later this year. That trio – comprised of current Hawkeyes Ben Kueter (U20 Freestyle) and Patrick Kennedy (U23 Freestyle), as well as incoming freshman...

Whoooo boy. If any of you out there were under the impression that wrestling season was going on hiatus as the calendar turns to June – well, you were sorely mistaken. But fret not, Hawkeye fans! This isn’t some last-minute ‘summer book club’ being thrust upon you by next year’s English teacher. Rather, the ‘assignment’ both you and I have been tasked with is to watch a whole bunch of high-quality freestyle action this weekend as both the Under-20 World Team Trials and Under-23 Nationals take place in Geneva, Ohio. So, if anything, we should be thanking our lucky stars for the coming days ahea...

Well, well, well – how about that afternoon/evening that we just witnessed for Iowa Hawkeye wrestling? One minute you’re going about your usual routine with an eye toward the Memorial Day weekend, and the next you’re being bombarded with news that encompassed pretty much the entire emotional spectrum. Over the span of roughly seven hours on Tuesday the Iowa men’s program dealt with ALL of the following: The disappointment of a potential transfer that could’ve been (but never actually was), the return of an All-American who’d previously been left adrift by NCAA suspension, a pivotal portal addi...

A common refrain among Iowa wrestlers is that ‘the biggest match in the world is simply the next match on the schedule.’ Now, whether outsiders believe that sentiment to more or less be coach-speak nonsense is up to them. But for Spencer Lee – one (former) Hawkeye who has repeatedly cited that mantra ever since arriving in Iowa City back in 2017 – it has perhaps never been truer than it is right now. This Saturday in Istanbul, Turkey, Lee will take the mat just four wins away from realizing a lifelong wrestling dream – punching his ticket to the Olympic Games. Standing in his way is a deep, ta...

When it comes to the sport of wrestling, there is no grander stage than the Olympic Games. As one of the event’s most ancient competitions – dating back in its origin to 708 B.C.E. – wrestling and the Olympics will always be synonymous with one another (even if the delusional International Olympic Committee actually tried to drop the sport from the Games a little more than a decade ago). With that said, if you’re an athlete in the United States who aspires to reach and compete on that stage in hopes of returning home with a medal around your neck than Step 1 is relatively simple: Earn your opp...

Some of the very best wrestlers in America will gather this weekend (April 6-7) at a nondescript location in Fairfax, Virginia. Their reason for being there? One final opportunity remains for them to keep their 2024 Olympic dreams alive. James W. Robinson Secondary School will serve as the site of USA Wrestling’s ‘2024 Last Chance Olympic Trials Qualifier’ – an event at which one athlete from each of 18 weight classes (six Women’s Freestyle, six Men’s freestyle and six Men’s Greco-Roman) will punch their ticket to State College (PA) later this month for a spot in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials (...
